Introducing Lexemes Through Turkish Proverbs

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

I am trying to bring about two changes at once.

One is to improve Wikidata by adding Turkish language Lexemes. This change is needed because interest in Turkish Lexemes has been relatively low and surface level. There is still a lot of very basic missing information, so this provides an opportunity for new editors to make meaningful contributions.

The second change is, a tried and true method as far as I understand, is to introduce the new generations to Wikipedia. Introducing Wikipedia at such a young age may not necessarily be very helpful in the short run but I believe that it'll translate into something better in the long run.

I also want to make sure that the next generation has more people using technology for productive purposes. I believe that showing the potential of lexemes and of Abstract Wikipedia will ensure that they won't take these features for granted and will be aware of the mechanisms creating Wikipedia, even if some don't join it.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

For the teaching part, I will draw inspiration from the quote “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.” throughout the whole project. My approach will be to simplify everything and boil them down to their essentials. After that, I will use analogies and provide examples to make the information more understandable and intuitive.

For the participation part, I aim to create a series of different activities to show the wide array of meanings language can produce. This will include things like teaching about exclamations, figurative speech etc. Another way of showing how much languages can be explored will be through sound and image. This can include things like taking photos of objects and voice recordings of words, both things that enrich Wikidata's Lexemes.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We're planning on going to a high school for 4-5 times, with 1 or 2 week intervals, depending on our schedules. We will do different activities every time, starting from basic things to more complex things.

One activity we have in mind is to teach everyone how to use an online dictionary, and how to convert the information from that into the Lexeme page. We may then show how one can enrich that page, with forms and senses.

For every part of our activity list, we plan to include examples of why a feature is necessary. An example may be using the wrong sense of a word for a comedic effect, and showing how Wikidata's lexeme archive provides a solution to that.

A way of encouraging participation will be to give the students little homeworks, such as asking them to ask for an archaic word from their parents, and then adding those words on Wikidata. This will both be helpful towards improving Wikidata and to improve the vocabulary of the students.

More activities will probably be included and otherwise improvised throughout the whole process.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

I will be working with user:gufo46

We have been working together on many projects, including an ongoing Wikipedia project.

We are both going to be salaried tutors who'll guide the students to learn Wikidata. We will take care of the shopping together. We will do the communication tasks together.

Gufo46 will be taking care of the logos and the posters. They will be working on getting the notebooks, stickers, and other necessary stationary supplies produced. They will help with using the SPARQL Wikiquery system.

I'll be preparing the study plans and doing the research on linguistics. I will

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Language, Not applicable

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

The state and quantity of Turkish Lexemes are comparatively worse off than the Lexemes of many other languages. This project is an attempt to bring Turkish up to the standards that many other languages have been able to reach.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Other

Digital literacy
8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Age, Digital Access

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Our target participants will be high school students. We want to cooperate with a school and we will approach some teachers in order to start communication with the administrators of said school. Once we start the project, we are planning to start with a presentation of what Lexemes are and what kind of a project Abstract Wikipedia is. After that, we will start with small contributions like words and senses for lexemes. In time, as the students start to intuitionalise the information, we will move on to proverbs and words inside the proverbs. (using the "combines lexeme" property, as is done with sentences) We plan to give the students a large amount of freedom on how they want to contribute. This could mean letting them choose the words/proverbs they want to contribute, giving them information on how they could contribute on their own time etc. We will do our best to include potential Wikipedia editors into the Wikipedia community afterwards, but I don't think that there'll necessarily be an immediate effect due to the age of the participants.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will be paying extra attention to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the project. We will get assistance from the teachers if students engage in discriminatory behaviour within each other. User:Gufo46 and I both have prior experience working in our university's Civic Involvement Projects, which is run with an inclusive approach, so we are confident in our ability to create a healthy environment.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

I haven't let anyone know yet, I will use the Telegram groups and our regular Wikituesday meetings to announce this project when necessary.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

We will be contacting a high school for their cooperation. We need them to provide a computer lab and places to host the workshops. We also need a teacher from the school to oversee our sessions in order to ensure that the workshops are going according to the school's rules.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

I want to learn about the willingness about formal authorities to see the value in non-conventional means of education. I want to learn about ways of simplifying complicated concepts and of how young people tend to interpret information given to them.

16. Based on these learning questions, what is the information or data you need to collect to answer these questions? Please register this information (as metric description) in the following spaces provided.
