Introducing Wikipedia to Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Wikipedia is increasingly becoming a knowledge hub where people can access all reliable information freely. I think that the academia has some important role to play in both the generation and spread of this knowledge. Incidentally, in Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), both staff and students know little or nothing about how they can contribute to Wikipedia. From my findings, there has not been any Wikipedia event in ESUT. Therefore those that are supposed to be editing and adding content to Wikipedia have no knowledge of how to contribute and students that are expected to leverage such open knowledge knows nothing about it. It is a gap that needs to be filled considering the importance of University staff and students in knowledge generation and dissemination. This proposal, if granted will be the very first of its kind in ESUT and will go a long way in establishing Wikipedia movement in the University. This will also serve as a spring board to the expansion of Wikipedia in Enugu metropolis given that Enugu city is a knowledge hub with so many Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of education all of which do no have knowledge of how to contribute and use Wikipedia.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I have planned to conduct 2 trainings and 1 edit-a-thon and one meet-up event for ESUT staff and post graduate students to train them on how to contribute and add contents to Wikipedia. This event will stimulate Wikipedia programs not only in ESUT but other schools in Enugu city. I will adopt hands-on- approach leveraging some experienced Wikimedia from University of Nigeria, Nsukka and other parts of Nigeria that have volunteered to work with me on this project. . I will also organize a meet-up event 2 weeks after the main event to follow up on the participants.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

I have planned to conduct 2 trainings and 1 edit-a-thon and one meet-up event for ESUT staff and post graduate students to train them on how to contribute and add contents to Wikipedia. This event will stimulate Wikipedia programs not only in ESUT but other schools in Enugu city. I will adopt hands-on- approach leveraging some experienced Wikimedia from University of Nigeria, Nsukka and other parts of Nigeria that have volunteered to work with me on this project. . I will also organize a meet-up event 2 weeks after the main event to follow up on the participants.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Wiki Loves Africa, Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

I have been attended the Equity Watch Initiave Art + Feminism events held in University of Nigeria Nsukka from Enugu, the state capital which is where ESUT is located. That opened my eye to the need to introduce this training to ESUT. I have contacted Dr. Chiemezie Atama, (User: Chiemezie Atama) the Founder of the Equity Watch Initiative and Organizer of the Wikipedia event I attended in Nsukka who has volunteered to help me. Also, Oby Ezilo (User: Oby Ezilo) a co-founder of Igbo User Group Nigeria and an experienced Wikimedia that have handled so many projects in Nigeria have also have graciously volunteered to assist me in organizing this training.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance)

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

I will be training academic staff and post graduate students on editing and adding content to Wikipedia focusing on Conflict, Violence and crime in South East Nigeria to close the knowledge about contributing to Wikipedia in this location and the content gap around the issues Conflict, Violence and Crime in the South Eastern Nigeria which is underreported which.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Digital Access

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

My target participants are academic staff and post graduate students of ESUT, Enugu, Nigeria. It is one of the few Universities in Nigeria that is not affected by strikes. Currently academic activities are ongoing in the school while other Universities are on strike. Though, I am a PhD student of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, I work with so many young lecturers and post graduate students at ESUT where I am also an ad hoc staff at the Department of Sociology. I also live in Enugu and I am very familiar with the environment. Therefore, I will leverage our research groups, WhatsApp platforms and also reach out to students and staff through some of the lecturers that I work with, I will reach out to post graduate seminar class representatives to make the announcement in their seminar classes. I will also leverage my Facebook page to share the information. After the events, I will create a WhatsApp platform that will host all the participants and through the platform I will continue to share information as well as follow up on participants to ensure they continue to add and edit contents. I will leverage the platform to build a community of Wikipedians in Enugu metropolis and possibly expand the awareness in other schools in Enugu town.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Because of security issues, the events will holds within the University which is relatively safe. To build a community of Wikimedians in Enugu, participants will be issued a certificate which I think will boost their interest and give them identity as Wikimedians. Both males and females will participate equally therefore provision will be made for child care and people with disability will be encouraged to attend and special care will be provided for them.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

I have notified the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria about this proposal via the discussion page of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria which can be accessed. I have also announced it in all my research group WhatsApp platforms. I have liaised with Post Graduate coordinator in ESUT, and as soon as I get approval for the event, it will be announced through faculty PG coordinators and there will be a periodic reminder about the events. I will also announced it on my social media handles. As soon as I get approval, I will create a WhatsApp platform and use the snowballing method to populate it even before the events. I plan to talk with the University public relation officer (PRO) to publicize it as soon as approval is granted.
