According to Wikipedia, there are over 525 native languages spoken in Nigeria. Out of these, not more than 7 languages are active on Wikipedia. Kare-Kare (also spelled as Karai-Karai) is an underrepresented language spoken in northern region of Nigeria. The language is spoken by hundred of thousands speakers as a native language, yet, it could possibly become extinct due to limited online presence and proper passage to the future generations despite the fact that the Kare-Kare people has worked on achieving standard writing system and have some few publications in an attempt to ensure that the language is revitalized. Sadly, most of the Kare-Kare speaking community are not aware or have a little knowledge about Wikipedia and that the Kare-Kare language is in the incubator which is the right place to put more efforts in ensuring knowledge sharing and culture preservation. Keeping in mind the above challenges, I plan to organize an awareness campaign to let the Kare-Kare community know that the language is on the Incubator and they can contribute by creating articles in Kare-Kare language. This is a huge step towards ensuring that this language is well documented and well accessible on Wikipedia, the global encyclopedia where gap in knowledge sharing in many languages is giving due consideration.

The introduction and training of Wikipedia in Kare-Kare language community will provide a valuable opportunity for knowledge-sharing and preservation of the Kare-Kare language and culture. We believe that this project will have a positive impact in Kare-Kare community and contribute to the diversity of content on Wikipedia. Overall, the project will also help recruit and train participants, who will be nurtured into active volunteers and contributors.

Our recent efforts has helped us in achieving the the following developments: 1. The Kare-Kare language is activated on Wikidata and currently has over 800 lexemes as can be seen here: https://ordia.toolforge.org/language/Q3438770 2. Collaborations with Wiki technical teams is made and there currently an ongoing work for developing the Kare-Kare language keyboard. The tested version can be seen here: https://ime.jague.net/examples/index.html 3. The Kare-Kare Wikipedia was nominated among the wikis that would their domain soon. 4. There are closely 200 well written articles on Kare-Kare Wikipedia on Incubator. Some can be seen here: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wp/kai

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We will adopt the following strategies to achieve effective results:

1. Training and workshops: To ensure that the participants are equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to the Wikipedia incubator, we will organize 2 days training and workshops.

2. Collaboration and partnerships: We will collaborate with experienced editors from Hausa Wikimedians User Group and Fulfulde to help their wealth of knowledge and experience towards making this project a success.

3. Translation efforts: We will also encourage the participants to translate articles from other languages into Kare-Kare to increase the representation of the Kare-Kare language and culture on Wikipedia.

The following activities will be developed and delivered as part of the project:

  • Organise one (1) time in-person and one (1) virtual workshops on creating, improving, and translating articles to Kare-Kare Wikipedia on the Kare-Kare Wikimedia Incubator. https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/kai/Sh%C3%A0fi_Maiw%C3%A0a, develop online tutorials and resources to support participants in creating and editing Kare-Kare Wikipedia on Wikimedia Incubator, establish a mentorship program to provide ongoing support to participants and host edit-a-thon to encourage participants to contribute to the Kare-Kare Wikipedia on incubator.
