Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group was established with the aim of promoting Wikimedia projects in the Kashmiri language and in the broader region of Kashmir. Over the past two years since our recognition by the Affiliations Committee, we have engaged in various activities to advance these projects in terms of content creation and volunteer recruitment. Despite significant challenges, we have made progress through partnerships with other affiliates. However, to have a wider impact in recruiting new volunteers and training existing editors, we believe concrete steps need to be taken. This grant is one of the steps we plan to implement over the next six months to further our mission. We aim to expand the quality, quantity, and accessibility of Kashmiri language content on Wikimedia platforms. There is a severe shortage of Kashmiri language content on online platforms including Wikimedia projects. Many important topics related to Kashmiri culture, history, and current affairs are underrepresented or absent. Additionally, many potential contributors in the region have limited digital literacy, which hinders their ability to contribute effectively. Furthermore, the current level of engagement and participation from the Kashmiri-speaking community is low, necessitating the building of a strong, active community of contributors. We have faced significant problems in terms of resources, which have affected our ability to have a wider impact despite our efforts and partnerships with other affiliates. To address these challenges, we plan to organise workshops to train new and existing contributors on how to create and edit articles on Wikimedia platforms. We will conduct outreach programs to educate the community about the importance of digital literacy and develop easy-to-understand tutorials and guides on using Wikimedia platforms. Working towards initiating translation projects to convert important articles from other languages into Kashmiri will help address linguistic barriers. We will also organise regular meetups, both online and offline, to create a sense of community among contributors and implement a system of recognition to motivate contributors. To overcome resource constraints, we seek this grant to enable broader impact. This grant is one of the steps we plan to implement in the next six months to recruit new volunteers and train existing editors. We will focus on reaching out to potential editors who have yet to discover the projects in the Kashmiri language and providing training to both new and existing volunteers. Through these efforts, we believe we can overcome current challenges and create a sustainable, vibrant community of Kashmiri Wikimedians.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The activities that are planned as a part of this project are documented on the page Activity plan October 2024 - March 2025.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The primary target participants for our activities are existing Wikimedia contributors who contribute to Kashmiri language projects. Since, they are the main driving for behind Wikimedia Movement in Kashmir region, our primary focus is on existing users. By strengthening them we can strengthen the roots of Movement in this region. We will also reach out to language enthusiasts from the region via social media and invite them to contribute to these projects.

To engage potential participants before the activities, we will utilize existing channels including social media handles, mailing list, and village pumps. We will organize introductory sessions to explain the purpose and benefits of contributing to Wikimedia projects in the Kashmiri language, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy and the preservation of Kashmiri culture and history through Wikimedia projects.

During the activities, we will create an inclusive and supportive environment for participants. Comprehensive training sessions will cover topics like content creation, editing, and navigating Wikimedia platforms. We will encourage participants to work on group projects to foster collaboration and a sense of community, with regular check-ins and interactive discussions.

After the activities, we plan to maintain ongoing communication with participants through follow-up emails and social media groups, providing updates on project progress and upcoming opportunities for further involvement. We will establish a mentoring program where experienced contributors can continue to support new participants in their contributions. We will also organize feedback sessions to gather participants' input on their experiences and identify areas for improvement in future activities.

To ensure sustained engagement, we will recognize and celebrate the achievements of participants by highlighting their contributions on our social media channels and issuing certificates of appreciation. We will also explore opportunities for participants to take on leadership roles within the Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group, encouraging them to become mentors or project coordinators. Our goal is to ensure the continued growth and development of Wikimedia projects in the Kashmiri language.
