Mek wi gro Naijá Wikipedia (en: Let's grow Naijá Wikipedia) is a project aimed at increasing the contributors and contents of Naijá Wikipedia. The project will be targeted towards students of the Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Nigerian Languages of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The project will provide the platform to engage students in content creation, development, and improvement. The project will aim at addressing the challenge of very limited content in the Naijá Wikipedia and the underutilization of the potential that can be harnessed from students. The project will equally address the very low number of contributors in the Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia by bringing more editors.

Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia is an essential platform for preserving Nigerian Pidgin culture, heritage, and language. There is a very limited content in Nigerian Pidgin compared to other languages, and this has been a significant challenge. The proposed project aims to increase the content in Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia by engaging students from the Department of Nigerian Languages of the National Open University of Nigeria.

The primary change we aim to bring about is to significantly increase the amount of content available in the Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia, making it a more comprehensive and accessible resource for native speakers of Nigerian Pidgin. Currently, the Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia has a limited number of articles, which hinders its potential as a valuable knowledge-sharing platform. The main challenges we are addressing are:

  • Limited content: The Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia currently hosts a very small number of articles compared to other language editions. Increasing the amount of content available will foster a more inclusive and diverse knowledge-sharing platform.
  • Few contributors, Low awareness and engagement: Many potential contributors and users may not be aware of the Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia or may not feel encouraged to contribute.

A project involving Wikipedia in Nigerian Pidgin or Naijá language is important for several reasons. Firstly, it helps to promote and preserve the Nigerian Pidgin language, which is a widely spoken language in Nigeria. By having more contents in the Nigerian pidgin Wikipedia, it acknowledges and celebrates the language's significance and its importance in Nigerian culture. Secondly, it makes information accessible to those who may not understand standard English, which is Nigeria's official language. This way, Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia provides a platform for communication of knowledge and information in a language that Nigerians can easily relate to and understand. This initiative can also help empower the Nigerian people by giving them easy access to knowledge in a language they are comfortable with. All in all, creating more content in Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia is important for promoting language diversity, cultural preservation, and making information accessible to a wider audience.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

My planned activities are as follows:

  • Recruitment: We will recruit participants from the students of the Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Nigerian Languages of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Lagos Study Centres to participate in the content creation and trainings. We will use the institution's social media platforms and on campus notice boards to reach out to potential participants.
  • Training: We will organize five trainings for participants on how to write articles in the Nigerian Pidgin language and how to use the Wikipedia platform to create and edit articles.
  • Content Creation: We will organize content creation sessions where participants will come together to create articles on various topics, such as history, culture, sports, and politics.
  • Review and Editing: After the content creation events, we will review and edit the articles to ensure they meet the Wikipedia standards.

The timeline for these activities are as follows:

  • Day 1: Registration (Recruitment), Introduction to Wikipedia, Wikipedia essentials, Editing basics, Group editing session
  • Day 2: Evaluating articles and sources, Sandboxes and mainspaces, hands-on practical

  • Day 4 & 5: Translating articles from English Wikipedia to Nigerian pidgin Wikipedia (using Visual edit, Source edit and Content Translation tools), Edit-a-thon, Review and Editing

I will make use of the training module in the outreach dashboard. I have prepared an on-wiki landing page, where more information about the program can be seen.

The primary target participants are students enrolled in the Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Nigerian Languages of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Lagos Study Centres. The community engagement process will involve skill-building sessions for students and provide them with the necessary equipment to create, research, and write in Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia. The project will also create a supportive community of student editors and encourage them to share their work and provide feedback to maintain the quality of the content. Students will be selected based on their knowledge, research interests, and willingness to participate.

Before the activities, participants will receive training sessions to ensure they are acquainted with the Wikipedia interface and guidelines necessary for research, writing, and editing in the Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia. During the project activities, we will provide continuous feedback, encouragement, and support to ensure participants' success. After the activities, we will monitor the progress of participants and reach out for feedback on the usefulness and relevance of the training received and edit-a-thons organized.
