9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Target Participants and Community: The PunjabWiki Education Program targets students and educators in government schools across Punjab, starting with Govt Sen Sec School Mahla Kalan, Punjab (India). The focus is on students who have fewer technology advantages and access to opportunities. The school authority has given their 13 sincere students from 2 classes i.e 9th and 11th. Among these 13 students, 9 are girls. This not only signifies our effort to narrow the educational gap but also to address the gender gap.

Engagement Strategies: The school authority granted permission to take one Wiki class in a week. Between August 2023 and December 2023, Jagseer, the project lead, has been managing this project and students have been actively engaged in learning the process of becoming Wiki contributors. He has conducted weekly classes, leading to increased familiarity among students with Wikipedia and Wikisource. Through Outreach Dashboard Training, they gained a basic understanding of the Five Pillars of Wikipedia, and they now have the ability to type in Punjabi using the Google Input Tool. Additionally, some students participated in classes where they were able to proofread Wikisource pages.

The primary obstacle we encounter is a shortage of devices, as the school lab currently only has five functional computers. To address this, the project mandates the procurement of additional equipment, and as part of the budget, we are incorporating a laptop. Designated for exclusive use within the project, specially by students, this laptop will be listed on a public equipment inventory. If any team member or the similar project teams needs the equipment for specific project-related requirements, it will be made available to them accordingly. The work that has been done so far can be found here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/PunjabWiki_Education_Program/Weekly_Report

Moving forward, we plan to scale up the project, incorporating awareness campaigns and orientation sessions before activities. Additionally, interactive learning experiences will be implemented during workshops to keep participants engaged. We will establish a dedicated WhatsApp group and arrange 1:1 telephone calls (if required) as part of post-activities and feedback sessions to ensure the sustained involvement of students in the project.

The initial conversation between Jagseer and Akabar Ali originated during WikiConference India 2023. Their discussion centered around the shared vision of engaging school students in contributing to the Wikimedia Movement. Inspired by this conversation, they jointly decided to launch an EduWiki project in Punjab, aiming to integrate educational institutions into the Wikimedia ecosystem. Building on their momentum, Jagseer and Akabar Ali met once again at the EduWiki Conference 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia. During this meeting, they delved deeper into the project's intricacies, fine-tuning their plans and establishing a roadmap for implementation. Later, at Wikimania 2023, Jagseer presented the EduWiki project to Suyash. Recognizing the potential for collaboration, they collectively decided to join forces with the Commons Photographers User Group. This strategic partnership aimed to enrich the project by incorporating the expertise and resources of the Commons Photographers User Group, thereby enhancing the impact and reach of their collaborative efforts in empowering students through Wikimedia initiatives.
