Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom for Secondary School Teachers in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria.

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Teachers in most secondary schools in Nigeria, especially secondary schools that are owned by the different state governments, do not have online resources to improve their knowledge and information. They only rely on information they could gather from textbooks. unfortunately, many of these schools do not have school library. The libraries that a few government schools have are so poorly equipped. Many of them have not received new books in the last 10 years. This is because of poor budgeting from the state governments and local governments that run these schools. There is also the issue of corruption in these governments. This leave teachers relying or whatever information they have from their school days when they studied education. I have been a teacher in government secondary schools from 1992 to date so I have personally been confronted with this challenge. I have also been faced with this challenge while carrying out my doctorate in the education programme at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. This challenge has also been identified by some secondary schools in Anambra state including the Denis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha. This is why they requested for assistance from Wikipedia for this training. Teachers need to have access to other sources of information, especially online materials.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The best way to enable these teachers to have access to additional and better information, beyond the old textbooks in some of their libraries, is to facilitate their access to free online resources. The online resources have to be free because the government that is able to buy textbooks for schools will also not be ready to pay for any subscription-based resources. Wikipedia is obviously the best free OER. Interestingly, WMF has a dedicated education programme for secondary school teachers called reading Wikipedia in the Classroom. This is a professional training program designed for teachers to learn how to integrate Wikipedia as a learning tool in their classrooms. The curriculum of this program is aligned with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy framework and it connects different approaches and methodologies used in the classroom to leverage the power of Wikipedia as a learning tool. It will provide them with an alternative format for learning new things outside the regular school curriculum while improving Wikipedia. The program also addresses teachers' research skills, such as the ability to make sense of information, the ability to verify, evaluate, and sift reliable information from information chaos, and the ability to use the information to create new knowledge. We intend to organize this programme for teachers in Onitsha in Anambra State. We will organize this programme in collaboration with Denis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS)l Onitsha who has requested this programme. Participants will be teachers in secondary schools in Abuja. DMGS has offered to host the programme. Teachers in different secondary schools in Onitsha will be reached through the association of schools. As a certified trainer of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Programme, I will be leading this training. I will be supported by other experienced Wikipedians. .

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We will announce in Onitsha and its environs that WMF will be organising the Reading in the Classroom Programme for secondary school teachers and invite teachers to fill out the online application form. We will issue an expression of interest form which will be circulated in different platforms that are popular in Onitsha, Anambra State including Facebook, WhatsApp etc. This will be a google form. We will also write to the leadership of some secondary schools in Onitsha informing them of the proposed training. Denis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha has expressed interest to collaborate with us by hosting the training. We expect to receive up to 100 applications. From the application forms, we will choose the 50 best applicants bearing in mind criteria like teachers with laptop, smartphone; that have an idea of how to browse the internet etc. We will prepare and situate the training manual in line with the standard curriculum and training documents as prepared for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Programme by the Wiki Education Team. There will be 4 physical sessions during the training and several online sessions. It will commence with an opening ceremony where key government and other officials in the education sector will be invited to make short statements. The training will involve -teaching teachers how to use Wikipedia as a learning tool in the classroom, and improve their media and information Literacy skills as approved by the UNESCO media framework and Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Programme. There will also be assignments. The assignments will be assessed and marked by the Wiki Education team headed by Mrs Mellissa Gwadalupe. When the assignments of the participants have the assessed, the successful ones will be issued certificates in accordance with the programme of the education team. The 4th physical session will be the graduation and closing ceremony. The programme will be carried out with close supervision of the Wiki Education Team.

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

We will find out whether participants agree that Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom is relevant to global educational issues and helps them to think critically. We will also want to know their impression of the module, quality of training material, timing etc. To achieve these, we will conduct a post-event survey. From my experience in my past project, I out that most teachers knew about Wikipedia but believed that it was written by the owners live every other encyclopedia. However, some teachers teach in schools that do not have free data, do not have laptops, and may find it difficult to access Wikipedia

16. Based on these learning questions, what is the information or data you need to collect to answer these questions? Please register this information (as metric description) in the following spaces provided.
