Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Before approving the funding, we established a promotion group firstly. We planned courses, looked for venues to promote Wikimedia activities, and looked for elders and experts who could interview the temple culture. After we got the sponsorship, firstly, we designed a postcard, poster and some patterns for a promotion project in January. Secondly, we applied for the venue for the meeting in February, and the main purpose was promoting the Wikimedia movement. Thirdly, we chose Tuesday evening as our online course, in order to encourage participants to get used to native language writing. Fourthly, we planned a field study and interview in May and published the information in META and Facebook. Finally, community members are encouraged to edit wiktionary and Wikidata. And after the interviews are completed, we uploaded the photos, audio files, and texts into commons and Wikisource from June to August.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

The effective ways to achieve goals: First, it is important to follow the original plan and work together as a team to accomplish it during the project period. If there are somethings that need to be reviewed and improved, it should be included in future improvement and corrections. Firstly, we believed that creating promotional materials is an excellent way to promote our cause. We had designed practical postcards, with a focus on daily life and temple-related themes, adding an element of fun in addition to their utility. We had applied for event venues, with a priority on securing a location through the "Ministry of Culture." Our primary promotional theme revolves around "Mother Language Day." While our aim is to promote temple culture, our main goal is to advocate for the Wikimedia movement. In order to facilitate continuous learning, we had designated Tuesday evenings as our online learning sessions. We encouraged participants to not only practice their mother language but also gain an understanding of Wikimedia projects. Before the interview, we had scheduled interviews with elders and pre-planned discussion topics. Additionally, we had actively recruited interested participants through Facebook. Besides, we periodically shared information in our mother language on META and Facebook communities. Lastly, we motivated community members to edit Wiktionary and Wikidata. After the interviews, we uploaded photos, audio files, and texts into Commons and Wikisource.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

We have observed that most participants who have an interest in temple culture can primarily understand and speak in Taiwanese. While our presentation activities effectively attract participants to our booth, promoting continuous writing and reading of related content remains an ongoing challenge. Furthermore, elderly participants often lack the technical skills needed to engage in the Wikimedia movement. During our promotional efforts, we have learned about LinguaLibre, which can assist elderly individuals in participating in the project and contributing their voices.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

1.Event Planning and Promotion: We participated in World Mother Language Day booth activities and found that most people are only familiar with Wikipedia and are unaware of other Wikimedia projects. Additionally, most Taiwanese speakers in Taiwan do not possess writing skills and cannot even read Taiwanese script. This perhaps underscores the importance of actively preserving text in Wikimedia projects. 2.Taiwanese Writing and Wikimedia Data Usage: We conduct regular Taiwanese writing classes on Tuesday evenings. Initially, these classes focused primarily on visual and reading methods, with writing gradually being introduced later on. Due to the limited time available for writing during workshops, the use of Wikimedia data is not as prominent, and this aspect may require further adjustment in the future. 3.Community Management: Community management is not our primary focus. However, to promote the Taiwanese language and introduce deity and temple culture, we periodically update content. 4.Interviewing Elders: Interviewing elders is a key part of our activities. We physically visit temples, old temples, and historical sites, taking photos and asking elders to share cultural and historical insights. We then document this information on Wikisource. This approach effectively increases oral documentation, photos, and audio related to temple culture, and we plan to continue this work in the future.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

1.Wikidata's Lexeme and Wiktionary These two projects are quite similar, but Wikidata's Lexeme has more potential for the future, particularly in the world of AI, where it can be widely applied. We have found that if someone is familiar with Lexeme and willing to synchronize Wiktionary information with Lexeme, it can be more beneficial for the promotion of Wikimedia projects. 2.Oral Language in Interview Locations Since we focus on recording temple culture, the terminology used is often specialized. Furthermore, the pronunciation may vary significantly between Yilan and other regions. While transcribing and documenting the content from audio recordings is a challenging process, we still consider interviewing elders and recording their oral accounts to be a crucial step. This should be a long-term endeavor. 3. Shortage of Video Editing Resources Throughout the project's execution, most of our members lack video editing skills, which has prevented us from presenting our work in the form of short videos. We should consider incorporating short video promotion as it can help people better understand the Wikimedia movement. 4. Promoting LinguaLibre We have found that using LinguaLibre is a convenient way to record audio content. Since most elderly individuals are not proficient in writing and are unfamiliar with Wikimedia projects, we can effectively utilize LinguaLibre to assist them in recording their voices and preserving their mother language in shared resources.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

The project has expanded the oral content on Wikisource, and in the future, this oral documentation should serve as a reference source for literature, becoming a text for language learning or a reference for promotion. In the long term, the vocabulary mentioned in Wikisource can still be integrated and applied with Wikidata's Lexeme and Wiktionary, which should be a priority goal for the future. We have noticed that Taiwanese language content on Wikimedia projects remains limited. Regarding future activities, we hope to continue focusing on Wikidata's Lexeme or increasing the use of Taiwanese captions.

Throughout our implementation process, we have also learned about LinguaLibre. We look forward to prioritizing LinguaLibre in our promotional goals to assist elders in recording their voices and uploading them to shared resources.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes

12a. State what difficulties you had.

We have noticed that while Taiwanese is our mother tongue, the predominant written language in Taiwan is Chinese. People who can speak Taiwanese often cannot write it and may not even understand the Taiwanese script. We are unable to transcribe audio quickly; transcribing one minute of audio can take up to an hour, as it involves searching dictionaries for words and completing the oral text records. This is the most time-consuming and labor-intensive task in the entire project, and new volunteers are less willing to spend time assisting with transcription and updating Wikimedia projects. In contrast to the activity scoreboard, which requires the addition of participant accounts, Wikiscan is a convenient way to gather statistics. With Wikiscan, we can clearly see the editing activity of each account on a monthly basis. Wikiscan統計(Wikiscan Statistics) https://zh-min-nanwiktionary.wikiscan.org/?date_filter=2023&menu=userstats

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

The biggest challenge during project execution is that we have identified many interview contents that could be updated on Lexeme and Wiktionary. However, due to the time-consuming nature of listening and transcribing, we haven't been able to dedicate additional time to updating related vocabulary on other Wikimedia projects. We hope that future projects can include workshops on Wikisource focusing on visual, auditory, and reading skills, with interview literature as the study material.

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).

14. Have you shared these results with other Wikimedian communities (either affiliates, user groups, volunteers, etc., different to yours)? This can include things such as data and direct outcomes, lessons you have learned, or information on how to run or recreate your programs.

Yes

14a. If yes or partially, please describe how you have already shared them and if you would like to do more sharing, and if so how.

The main platforms for sharing the results of Wikimedia projects are primarily Facebook and Meta. We openly share information about any achievements and engage in discussions with various communities. During this process, we not only share the outcomes of interviews and event promotions but also provide links to Wikimedia projects. We have noticed that most volunteers are not familiar with Lexeme and Wiktionary, so we also contribute our knowledge and share our experiences.
