Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Twi Wikipedia for the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The Twi Wikipedia has been in existence for many years, but it lacks quality articles and updates, even for local content. Most vital articles, including those related to current Members of Parliament in the 14th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana (elected in 2021), either do not exist or need improvement. In response to this, this project aims to create articles for current Members of Parliament on the Twi Wikipedia and improve their respective articles on the English Wikipedia.

Moreover, the targeted regions for this project have a significant number of dominant Twi speakers who are unaware of the existence of a local Wikipedia. Therefore, this project will not only introduce and engage both new and old Twi contributors from the Eastern and Greater Accra regions but also raise awareness of the existence of a local Wikipedia in these areas. Additionally, this project comes at a crucial time, as there has been a decline in editor contributions and retention rates in recent months.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The goal of this project is to enhance the capacity of community members and improve retention rates by engaging both new and experienced editors to edit Wikimedia projects, specifically in Twi language, in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions of Ghana where Twi is widely spoken. In addition to building community capacity, this project will provide readers with a platform to search and find current articles in their local language. It's noteworthy that the targeted regions have a considerable population of dominant Twi speakers who are unaware of the existence of a local Wikipedia.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The objective of this project is to broaden community engagement in the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions of Ghana, with a specific focus on Twi contributors where the Akuapem Twi language is dominant. To achieve this, we intend to host two in-person events, one in Accra and the other in Koforidua, which has a diverse and comprehensive settlement. Following these events, we will conduct a month-long editing contest, with two "office hours" sessions held during the contest period to encourage participation and recruit new editors.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Other (please specify)

Creating Awareness about Wikimedia Projects and Twi Wikipedia
5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Robert (User:Robertjamal12) is an experienced editor and event organizer. He serves as an administrator on Twi Wikipedia and is an active contributor to the Fante Wikipedia incubator. He also spearheaded the Twi translatewiki.net event, which aimed to localize the Twi language. In this project, Robert will co-facilitate training sessions and provide strategic support.

Henry (User:Lilparpy) is an experienced editor and a Twi Language professional who has created more than 200 articles on Twi Wikipedia. He will provide general assistance to task leads and communications.

Lynessa Ofori (User:Lynessa Ofori) is an experienced editor, event organizer, and facilitator who will lead and coordinate this project.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

There is a significant disparity between indigenous languages and translated content in most local and spoken languages in Ghana. This project aims to bridge the information gap and language barrier by populating Twi Wikipedia and its sister projects to gain recognition. The program will prioritize documenting information on Twi Wikipedia and focus on addressing the lack of representation of women who have made significant contributions to society but are not adequately represented online.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture, heritage or GLAM , Advocacy, Diversity

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The intended audience for this project includes current volunteers of the Twi Wikipedia, Twi speakers in the Eastern Region, as well as individuals who are fluent in the Twi language (both Asante and Akuapem) and are interested in contributing to the project.

Communication will be facilitated through channels such as Whatsapp, Telegram, and social media platforms. To maintain engagement and participation following the implementation of the proposal, we plan to employ various strategies, including gathering contact information through feedback forms, offering optional mailing lists or social media groups, identifying and inviting the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable contributors to future events, and adding new members WhatsApp/Telegram group for discussions.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We are committed to following the Wikimedia friendly space policy, which means that we will assume good faith in all contributions and opinions from volunteers. Our project is open to any interested volunteer, and we will provide them with the necessary support to ensure they are well taken care of throughout their participation.
