The University of Maiduguri, is a federal government-owned institution in Nigeria, our mission is to catalyze change by fostering greater awareness, dispelling doubts, and promoting active participation in Wikimedia projects among the university's diverse student body. Located in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State, our university stands as a vital center for higher education in the North East region. Our primary objective is to address several key challenges, including low awareness, doubts regarding accuracy, and limited participation in Wikimedia initiatives. To accomplish this, our strategy involves implementing various approaches. These include organizing awareness campaigns through educational trips, distributing informative materials, and leveraging online platforms to reach a wider audience. Additionally, we plan to conduct training sessions to equip participants with essential editing skills, enhance local content, and nurture a sense of community among Wikimedia enthusiasts through regular meetups and collaborative projects. By implementing these strategies, we aim to cultivate a more informed and engaged Wikimedia community within the University of Maiduguri, thereby fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration among its students.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
  • Promoting Awareness Through On-Campus Excursions:

Organize and execute on-campus excursions to effectively disseminate information about Wikimedia projects to a broad spectrum of students, faculty, and staff members. Establish information booths or stands in high-traffic areas such as libraries, common spaces, or dining areas, where individuals can engage directly with representatives and receive informative pamphlets about Wikipedia and its affiliated endeavors. Utilize these excursions as platforms for initiating dialogues, addressing inquiries, and dispelling any uncertainties regarding the credibility of Wikipedia. The primary objective of this endeavor is to pique interest, arouse curiosity, and generate anticipation for the forthcoming training sessions.

  • Conducting Remote Training Sessions:

Facilitate two remote training sessions using Zoom meeting. These sessions can be structured as interactive webinars or virtual Workshops, covering fundamental topics such as navigating Wikipedia, comprehending its editing interface, citation protocols, and optimal approaches for contributing to Wikimedia projects. Provide comprehensive demonstrations, offer practical exercises, and encourage active engagement and discourse among participants. Remote training sessions offer flexibility and accessibility, widening the scope of outreach and accommodating individuals with scheduling constraints.

  • Facilitating In-Person Workshops:

Host two in-person training sessions as workshops or seminars conducted on-site within the university premises. Identify appropriate venues equipped with essential resources such as computers or projection facilities. Develop captivating training materials, including handouts or presentation slides, to facilitate the learning experience. Cover similar subject matter as the remote training sessions, but with the added benefit of fostering face-to-face interactions, immediate feedback, and personalized assistance. In-person workshops cultivate a sense of community and enable participants to forge connections and networks among themselves.

  • Designing and Disseminating Informative Flyers:

Craft visually appealing flyers that communicate the advantages of Wikipedia, dispel misconceptions, and publicize the training sessions and Wikimedia community. Incorporate key messages, event particulars, and contact details. Distribute the flyers during on-campus excursions, position them strategically throughout the university, and encourage attendees to share them with their peers. Flyers serve as tangible reminders of the opportunities and resources available through Wikimedia projects, reinforcing interest and engagement within the university community.
