Bayero University Kano, a longstanding institution in Nigeria, boasts a substantial student body and a diverse faculty. Despite this, there has been a lack of training to empower young individuals capable of driving and advancing the vision and mission of the Wikimedia Foundation. As an active editor with experience in various training programs, including Train the Trainer's organized by Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, I recognize the need for a project to recruit more campus members to contribute to the movement. This initiative aims to achieve three key objectives: making Wikipedia and its sister projects more embraced in the University Community, encouraging active participation from students and lecturers in contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects, and fostering a community of editors.

Approaches:

Introducing Recognition for Wikipedia and its Sister Projects at the Bayero University Kano: While Wikipedia and its associated projects enjoy widespread recognition, some educators and students at the BUK express doubt, attributing it to the perception that open accessibility undermines credibility. To address this, our team of experienced Wikimedia editors plans an extensive awareness campaign to underscore the authenticity and importance of Wikimedia projects, fostering trust and acceptance within the academic community.

Fostering Active Engagement of Students and Lecturers in Wikimedia Projects: Misconceptions about Wikimedia projects being automated and devoid of human influence create a belief in static information. Our team aims to dispel this notion by promoting awareness of using Wikimedia projects for research purposes. Through engagement with the university community, we seek to guide participants in enhancing Wikimedia content, emphasizing the dynamic nature of the platform and challenging the perception of it being solely machine-controlled.

Establishing the BUK Wikimedia Community: Beyond training staff and students, ensuring the ongoing success of the project necessitates a united platform. This forum will provide a collaborative space for participants to address issues and overcome challenges encountered in their contributions to Wikimedia projects, ensuring the sustained viability of the initiative.
