According to UNICEF and WHO Tanzania’s Constitution recognizes the human right to water and sanitation, and national plans reflect the importance of equitable access to quality WASH services. The country has made notable progress in recent years, with three in five households having access to improved drinking water (98% in Zanzibar). 31% of families use improved toilets and 47% have handwashing stations at home. Girls and women are disproportionately affected by the burden of fetching water, inadequate menstrual health and hygiene services at school, and poor WASH services in healthcare facilities, which puts mothers and newborns at risk. Climate change and rapid population growth compound the WASH challenges, which need to be addressed to ensure that no one is left behind.

After significantly exploring and realizing that there is missing content on Wikipedia about water, sanitation and hygiene which made notable contributions in Tanzania and their publications are not on Wikipedia therefore awareness needed to be published to help others to gain knowledge. Only a few of them have been represented on Wikipedia and its sister projects. There are thousands of active and notable water sanitation and hygiene articles from other countries with their languages. However, very few of them have their contribution to Wikipedia, only a few of them have their articles on Wikipedia.

Additionally, there may be barriers such as language barriers, technical hurdles, trusted information sources and unfamiliarity with Wikipedia editing processes that discourage potential contributors from sharing information about Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Tanzania. Wikipedia is one of the most widely accessed sources of information globally. By creating articles about Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. The main approaches that will be used to solve that challenge are

Collaborations and Networks: Investigate the WASH with other sources, both within boundaries in Tanzania to identify and engage with WASH sources, impacts and solutions. By fostering partnerships and conducting outreach events, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of documenting Tanzanian WASH's crisis contributions on Wikipedia

Edit-a-thon: Conducting an edit-a-thon to both newbies and experienced editors on how to contribute. After the editors have been trained on how to create and improve articles related to water, sanitation and hygiene, there will be a closely monitored edit-a-thon that would be used to massively improve Wikipedia and its sisters' projects of Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Improving existing articles: Most of the articles about water, sanitation and hygiene are stubs. They lack appropriate categorization, no description, and are without images. The participants would be trained on how to successfully contribute to them.

Articles Translation: Most articles about water, sanitation and hygiene are in English, we will translate from English to Swahili to add more content to Swahili Wikipedia.

We will engage potential participants through various means, including interactions with water technicians, environmental associations, WASH Clubs, associations. During the project, we will actively facilitate the training, ensuring that participants gain the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to Wikipedia and sister projects. Additionally, we will monitor the three-week online edit-a-thon to prevent any vandalism or misinformation.

The project will contribute to the development of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons by building knowledge and creating more active editors, as well as improving the quality of photo uploads.
