Our primary goal is to bring about a positive change in the representation of Kano's cultural and historical content on Wikimedia projects. By empowering local women through the WikiFemme Learning Lab, we aim to amplify diverse voices and perspectives, contributing to a richer and more inclusive knowledge base.

  • The Challenges or Problems:

The challenges we aim to address include the underrepresentation of Kano's cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects. Currently, there is a notable gap in content related to Kano, limiting the diversity of perspectives available to a global audience. Additionally, there are barriers to participation, especially among women, that hinder the creation and dissemination of knowledge.

  • The Approaches to Achieve Change:

Our approach involves organizing a series of learning labs and workshops in Kano, specifically tailored to address the challenges identified. We will provide training on Wikimedia editing, content creation, and community engagement. By fostering a supportive learning environment, we aim to encourage local women to actively contribute to Wikimedia projects.

Planned Activities:

A- Physical Events (Two Days):

Day 1: Kickoff and Workshops

  • Kickoff Session:

We will begin with an opening session to introduce participants to the WikiFemme Learning Lab and provide an overview of the project's goals, schedule, and expected outcomes.

  • Basic Editing Workshop:

We will conduct a hands-on workshop focusing on basic Wikimedia editing skills. Engaging participants in creating user accounts, navigating Wikipedia, and making simple edits.

Community Building Session: We will organize a community-building session to encourage networking among participants. Facilitate introductions, share success stories, and foster a sense of community.

Day 2: Advanced Workshops and Content Creation Campaign

  • Advanced Editing Workshop:

We will offer an advanced editing workshop for participants who attended the basic session on Day 1. Cover more advanced editing techniques, citation practices, and collaborative editing.

  • Content Creation Campaign:

We will launch a content creation campaign focusing on specific themes related to Kano's cultural heritage. Encouraging participants to contribute articles, images, and media files.

  • Interactive Sessions and Q&A:

Our team consists five members who are passionate about promoting the Wikimedian projects and increasing awareness about wikimedia projects in northern Nigeria. All of our team members are volunteers.


A'isha A Ibrahim (Project Lead): I am responsible for overseeing the project and ensuring that all activities are carried out in accordance with the grant proposal. I previously participated on several Wikimedia projects' events in Northern Nigeria.


Hauwau sulaiman (Workshop Facilitator): She is responsible for coordinating the content creation process and ensuring that all articles are high quality and reliable. She brings a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the project. Her dedication to learning and contributing aligns with the collaborative spirit of the WikiFemme Learning Lab.


Ibrahim Sani Mustapha (Community Engagement Coordinator): He is a committed Wikimedian Editor. He is an excel in responsible for coordinating outreach activities and engaging with local organizations and community members to raise awareness about the project. His fresh perspective and eagerness to contribute to the project make him a valuable team member.


A Sulaiman Z (Technical Support and Online Moderator): He will bring technical expertise as a Wikimedian Editor. With a background in online training and awareness. He will provide essential support for online components. His commitment to learning and contributing in a new capacity makes him a valuable addition.

A Salisu (project facilitator): She is also an experienced Wikimedian editor more especially in Hausa Wikipedia and other Wikipedia sister projects. She organized the Wikimedian event before and a member at the Hausa Wikimedians User Group.

All the team members are active members of the Wikimedia community in Nigeria and are committed to promoting open knowledge in the society.

Target Participants: Our primary target participants for the this project are individuals from the Kano community, with a specific focus on:

  • Women contributors interested in contributing to Wikimedia projects.
  • Local educators and students interested in integrating Wikimedia activities into their curriculum.
  • Members of cultural organizations with a passion for preserving and sharing Kano's cultural heritage.

Engagement Before Activities:

We will conduct targeted outreach through local community centers, educational institutions, and cultural organizations to generate awareness about the WikiFemme Learning Lab. Utilize both online and offline channels, including social media and community events.

The project team engaged with local organizations, community members and individuals of Kano state and received feedback. They also reached out to the Hausa Wikimedians User Group WhatsApp Group and other communities in the region for collaboration.

To involve the community in the planning process, the project team were discussed with Wikimedian Editors of Kano state to better understand their needs and concerns regarding editing skills and representation on Wikimedian projects.

The project team documented all community engagement activities and discussions on the Hausa Wikimedian User Group on Discussion page of relevant articles on Wikipedia. They shared updates and progress reports on the Wikimedia Foundation's grant proposal review system, where they received feedback and suggestions from the broader Wikimedia community.
