WikiForHumanRights Ireland 2024 Grassroots Activists Speed Dating and Knowledge Exchange

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2024-06-01 - 2024-07-01

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Ireland

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

WikiForHumanRights

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

We would like to provide a space for key changemakers and grassroots activists or people with specific knowledge that could help to navigate climate change in Ireland, to network and also learn how to share this knowledge on Wikipedia and make it open for all.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Speed dating event. I plan to invite key players, policymakers, campaigners, and activists within the context of the right to the environment and climate change issues, to come and network with Wikimedians and those with grassroots knowledge about ways to navigate climate change (ie. regenerative farmers, sustainability advocates, small makers, etc.). I hope for this speed dating event to enhance networks and communication within Ireland and also foster collaboration between these groups. 2. Wikipedia information session and guest speakers. I hope to invite some of the attendees to give a talk about their climate change activism or grassroots knowledge that has supported more sustainable living. I then hope to give some Wikipedia training and make these key players aware of the ways they can make their knowledge accessible and open so that it can be benefitted from elsewhere also. 3. A bilingual editathon in English and Irish will be held online so that all community members can partake and edit or upload information on the theme of Water, as Ireland is an island that is currently, at risk of coastal flooding due to climate change and the erosion of our shorelines. 4. We will also record a series of podcast episodes as part of the WikiforHumanRights campaign to highlight the role of open knowledge within climate change and also give key climate change and human rights activists a platform to spread their message and knowledge. 4. A social media campaign across platforms will accompany all events.

These activities closely align with our strategic goals of enhancing partnerships and collaborations, expanding our reach, and also improving the level of the Irish language on Wikipedia.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

-Wikimedians in Ireland

  • Climate Change Advocate groups
  • Cliamte change advocates
  • Those with knowledge about climate change issues in Ireland or sustainable living, farming or other practices who are not connected with Wikimedians but want to find a way to share their knowledge
  • Individuals with grassroots with knowledge on sustainable ways of living
  • Non-Wikimedians who are interested in Climate change and Human Rights issues
  • Irish language speakers

Before activities, I plan to run a social media and general outreach campaign to attract attention and find key collaborators or partners for the event. I also plan to invite people working or advocating for the right to the environment such as grassroots organisations and campaigners and also academics or researchers directly to the event. I also hope to partner with one of three venues for the event. These include The Hunt Museum in Limerick (which recently held a Climate Cahnge Conference), Aras na nGael in Galway (an Irish Language and arts centre) or Trinity College Library, (where we will soon have a Wikimedian in Residence). I am awaiting a response from these venues. Before and after the event we plan to release podcast episodes to get the word out and generate some interest within the Wikimedian Community. This event will take place in tandem with Wiki Loves Earth Photo Contest which will provide another way for participants to engage with the campaign. The online editathon will be on-going for the month and will provide a place for particpants to engage with Wikipedia and use their editing skills. Our monthly Irish language editing meetup will also be thematically in line with WikiForHumanRights.
