6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Our vision for Billiri is a dynamic shift towards greater involvement and content creation on Wikipedia. Despite being a prominent community in Northern Nigeria, blessed with a rich cultural and educational heritage, Billiri grapples with a shortage of Wikipedia editors and a noticeable absence of initiatives promoting Wikipedia within the region.

The primary challenge we aim to address is the underrepresentation of Billiri on Wikipedia. Our focus is on mitigating the scarcity of editors and fostering awareness about Wikimedia projects within the community. Through the WikiReach Billiri project, our objective is to establish a robust foundation for the widespread adoption and utilization of Wikimedia products, especially among the youth.

Our strategic approaches include:

1. Establishing a Community of Wikimedia Editors: We plan to cultivate a local community of editors, ensuring ongoing engagement and collaborative content creation within Billiri.

2. Comprehensive Training for Participants: Our initiative involves providing extensive training to 65 new editors from different higher institutions, writers, and youth associations. This will equip them to actively contribute to various Wikimedia projects, making a lasting impact.

3. Utilizing Outreach Dashboard: We will leverage the outreach dashboard, supported by both offline and online editors, to meticulously track contributions and monitor the progress of participants. This ensures a transparent and accountable process.

4. Active Recruitment and Training: Actively recruiting and training new editors from diverse backgrounds will guarantee the active involvement of students and youths, fostering a community-driven approach to content creation.

5. Raising Awareness about Wikimedia Projects: Our emphasis will be on highlighting the significance of Wikimedia projects, with a special focus on Hausa Wikipedia and other sister projects. This approach aims to bridge the language gap and ensure diverse and culturally rich content creation representing Billiri.

6. Creating a WhatsApp Group for New Editors: Establishing a dedicated communication channel through a WhatsApp group will facilitate ongoing support, encouragement, and monitoring of new editors throughout their content creation journey.

Through these carefully crafted approaches, WikiReach Billiri aspires to bring about a positive transformation by empowering the community to actively contribute, share their knowledge, and evolve into champions for Wikipedia projects.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The WikiReach Billiri project is designed to unfold through a series of five sessions, each contributing to the overall success of the initiative. Here is an outline of the planned activities:

1. Awareness Trips:

  - Conduct sensitization and awareness trips within the community, touring various premises to explain the activities of Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  - Distribute fliers and handbills containing information about Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  - Publicize the selection process for participants through the project's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557030310851) once approved.
  - Identify and engage fifty (65) eager participants from the community.

2. Online Onboarding Session:

  - Introduce newly recruited Wikimedia editors to the Wikimedia projects and their activities.
  - Address account creation and minor editing issues during the session conducted via Zoom/Google Meet.
  - Publicize the session link for wider participation.

3. First Physical Workshop:

  - Facilitate one-on-one interaction with the sixty-five recruited participants.
  - Conduct practical sessions on how to improve Wikipedia and its sister projects.

4. Second Physical Workshop (Photowalk):

  - Organize a Photowalk, taking participants to one of the remarkable palaces in Billiri to capture compelling images.
  - Uploade these images to WikiCommons, enhancing the visual representation of the city.
  - Allow participants to share their editing challenges for team assistance.

5. Second Online Session and Edit-a-thon:

  - Conduct another online training session to refine the editing skills of both new and existing editors.
  - Launch a three-week Edit-a-thon, recognizing and awarding certificates of excellence to winners and participants.
  - Establish the Billiri Wikimedia Community to ensure long-term sustainability for the project.

These meticulously planned activities aim to foster community engagement, educate participants, and create a lasting impact on the representation of Billiri on Wikimedia projects.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

This proposal is tailored for the diverse youth of the Billiri Community, aiming to engage them through strategic channels before, during, and after the project implementation. Here's the plan:

Engagement Before the Project:

  • Utilize local radio stations, community meetings, and club-focused group discussions to generate awareness about the project.
  • Leverage memberships in three community associations and the role of secretary in the Billiri Youth Development Initiative, which has a substantial community following.
  • Leverage personal experience in program management and regular appearances as a radio guest to create effective awareness and seamlessly influence the overall implementation of the training.

Call for Participation:

  • Utilize local communication channels, such as E-posters, banners, and one-on-one contact, to reach the youth community.
  • Leverage a significant social media following, especially on Facebook, to ensure speedy access to information for the target participants.

Engagement During the Project:

  • Send an online Google form to participants for registration.
  • Involve team members actively in facilitating the training, ensuring participants grasp the logic and knowledge required for contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  • Conduct three physical and two online sessions to thoroughly engage and guide editors on bridging the knowledge and content gap across various Wikimedia projects.

Follow-up and Sustainability:

  • Encourage participants to join as members of the Wikimedia community post-events to stay updated and foster continued participation in subsequent Wikipedia projects.
  • Add participants to existing messaging channels for follow-up, updates, questions, and inquiries through the Wikimedia Community WhatsApp group and other physical meetings.
  • Invite participants to future Wikimedia events to maintain their engagement and impact on ongoing projects.

Ongoing Communication:

  • Keep tight contact with participants through the Billiri Wikimedia Community WhatsApp group, sharing information on the latest Wikipedia events, workshops, and other developments related to Wikimedia projects.
  • Remain actively in touch with partner user groups, particularly the Hausa User Group, ensuring ongoing collaboration and support for sustained impact.

You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

I shared the project idea with the Hausa Wikimedia Group through WhatsApp, and I am actively involved in the general user group's WhatsApp discussions. Engaging these groups ensures that the community is informed about the proposal and provides an opportunity for them to contribute valuable insights and feedback.

To facilitate further discussion and gather community input, I will be creating a dedicated on-wiki page for the project proposal. This page will serve as a centralized space for community members to review, discuss, and provide feedback on the proposal. The collaborative nature of on-wiki discussions allows for transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process.

You can find the on-wiki discussion page for the project proposal ( https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557030310851 ).

By actively involving the community in both online and offline discussions, we aim to gather diverse perspectives and ensure that the project aligns with the needs and interests of the community.
