The Change
The change we are trying to bring is to increase the female participation and retention in Wikimedia projects by establishing a mentorship program for new female editors. This initiative seeks to empower women, enhance their editing skills, and build a supportive community, ultimately leading to more diverse and inclusive content on Wikimedia projects.
The Challenges or Problems
The challenges or problems we are trying to solve are:
- Gender Gap: There is a significant gender gap in Wikimedia contributors, with female editors being underrepresented. This imbalance leads to a lack of coverage on topics related to women's issues and achievements.
- New Editor Retention: Many new female editors face challenges such as navigating complex editing guidelines, encountering harassment, and feeling isolated, which can lead to high dropout rates.
- Skill Development: New editors often lack the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute effectively and confidently, which can hinder their participation and impact.
Change Description:
The project aims to create a structured and supportive environment for female editors, helping them to become active and confident contributors. By providing mentorship, training, and a sense of community, the project will address the challenges of gender imbalance, retention, and skill development.
Main Approaches
- Mentorship Program: Pair new female editors with experienced mentors who can guide them through the editing process, offer support, and provide valuable feedback.
- Training Workshops: Conduct workshops and training sessions to equip new editors with essential skills and knowledge about Wikimedia editing practices.
- Regular Check-ins and Support: Establish regular communication between mentors and mentees to address any challenges, provide encouragement, and ensure ongoing support.
- Community Building: Organize virtual and in-person events, such as edit-a-thons and meet-ups, to foster a sense of community and collaboration among female editors.
By addressing these challenges through targeted mentorship, training, and community-building efforts, the "WikiSisters" project aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for female editors, ultimately leading to a more diverse and comprehensive Wikimedia projects.
