The Algerian Wikimedians User Group or WikiDZ is a local user group officially recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation. Its mission is to promote Wiki projects in Algeria. Mainly to help and encourage people to collect, develop, and disseminate knowledge and other educational, cultural, and historical content under free licenses that allow everyone to freely use human knowledge.

The primary goal of this campaign is to increase the number of active Wikimedia users in Algeria and the diaspora by encouraging new users and movement members to participate in highlighting knowledge-related issues for a sustainable future and climate change through Wikimedia projects in local or international languages, including Wikipedias, Wiktionaries, Wikidata, and Commons.

The campaign will use training workshops to increase the capacity of new users and improve their understanding of climate change and the need for a sustainable future in a healthy environment. editathons, webinars, and contests will be held with local volunteers and personal initiatives working on environmental rights, such as teachers, university students, Wikipedians, Wiktionnarists, photographers, etc.

The planned activities for the campaign include the following:


  • Wiki for Climate Change workshop: This workshop aims to teach climate activists in Algeria how to use Wikimedia projects to highlight and contribute to knowledge-related issues for a sustainable future, utilising different languages.


  • Meeting for wiki tacawit language: This meeting aims to include words related to climate change and a sustainable future.


  • Organizing a contest in Wiktionary in the Wikipedia Arabic community: The aim is to encourage contributors to add words related to climate change and a sustainable future.


  • Capacity-building sessions for the Maghreb region: This session will focus on how to use event tools to organise local events related to climate change and a sustainable future.


  • Organising a talk Webinar on "Wiki for Climate Change 2024: Algeria's Knowledge for a Sustainable Future: A Successful Model": This webinar aims to raise awareness about climate change and a sustainable future through Wikimedia projects.


These activities were chosen in accordance with the campaign's objectives, which are to increase new users' capacity to contribute to Wikimedia projects and improve content related to climate change and sustainability. The participatory approach will involve the primary contributors in determining topics for participation activities in Wikimedia projects. Furthermore, the activities aim to engage new members and explore new Wikimedia project communities.

The target participants for this initiative include teachers, university students, climate change activists, Wikipedians, Wiktionnarists, and the Wikimedia community in Algeria and the Algerian diaspora, as well as in the Maghreb region and the Arabic world (including Algeria, Morocco, the Tamazight community, Tunisia, tacawit community).

To engage participants before and during the activities, the organizers plan to use a variety of methods:

  • Remote dashboard: A projector appears on a remote dashboard to develop content during different activities.


  • Social networks: Publicity efforts will include reaching out to participants through event tools and social networks.


  • Publicity bans: Utilizing advertising and promotional materials.


  • Affiliates and posters: Distributing promotional materials such as posters and brochures.


After the activities, the organizers intend to follow up with participants through:

Meetings with Local Members: The project organisers met with Wikimedia Algeria members and their diaspora in Canada. These meetings provided an opportunity to discuss the proposal and solicit feedback. In addition, discussions were held with global and the Maghreb region community members. The goal was to engage a larger network of contributors and ensure diverse perspectives.

We hope that by the end of the campaign, training, and workshops, many participants and new contributors will be aware of the composition of the contents in the themes that automatically drop into issues related to climate change and knowledge for a sustainable future in Algeria via Wikimedia projects in international and local languages.

Articles on the effects of climate change in Algeria will be included in the Wikimedia Projects' content. Learn new skills like leadership and effective communication with local partners. Participants will share their content and be encouraged by Algerian community members to continue volunteering and contributing to Wikimedia projects related to knowledge for a sustainable future.
