Grant Proposal

[edit]
M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Wiki For Climate and Environmental Literacy in Rivers State

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

River state is one of the largest oil producing states in Nigeria, even as Nigeria is one of the top oil producing countries in the World. However, the continued exploration and spillage of oil, coupled with the increasing activities of illegal refiners and bunkerers, have led to increased environmental and climatic problems (in the state) including air pollution, water pollution, lead exposures, poor waste management, deforestation amongst others. Also, illegal bunkering and gas flaring has increased the presence of soot airborne particulate matter which could lead to chronic respiratory diseases and heart problems. However, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/climate-solutions/education-key-addressing-climate-change) as well as several studies (like Yakubu, 2018) have identified environmental risk communication and environmental literacy as key strategies to addressing climate change and environmental problems. This project therefore aim to advance a healthy environment in the state by training selected undergraduate students on issues relating Climate Change, Carbon literacy, Ecological literacy and environmental literacy using Wikipedia, so as to help promote green economy and ensure sustainable development in Nigeria. Also, this project is conceived to help fill the Wikipedia content gap around environmental and climate change issues, with specific focus on local content.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

In order to help achieve a healthy environment in Rivers State, we will be creating awareness and sensitization campaigns, training residents (undergraduate students) on climate change and environmental matters so they can be better equipped knowledge-wise to make informed decisions as well as educate others in the state. This will ultimately help improve the climate and environmental literacy levels in the state in the long run. We strongly believe this will work because environmental education is currently considered an important strategy to addressing environmental issues. Although, there are no formal opportunities for residents to learn about environmental and climate change issues, hence this project is proposed to help train selected undergraduate students from two higher institutions in Rivers State (Rivers State University and Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic) on the subject matter. A total of 30 undergraduate students each will be trained from two higher institutions and they will be expected to train, educate and mentor others on climate change and environmental issues.

Furthermore, we will be organizing a Wikipedia training and edit-a-thon so that the sixty trained undergraduate students can help close the content gap about climate change and environmental issues, with a focus on local content. I believe this approach will help to improve the environmental literacy of residents in River state, as well as other persons outside the state as more accurate and reliable information will be made available.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We will be organizing the following activities:

1. Awareness and sensitization campaigns about Climate change and environmental issues. We will also carry out an awareness campaign on Wikipedia project editing among undergraduates in the two selected higher institutions in the State. This will enable us to raise climate change champions who are skilled in using Wikimedia projects to address climate change and environmental issues so as the achieve sustainable development in Nigeria
2. We will organize two in-person events per institution followed by 3 virtual sessions on Zoom. These events will consist of Wikipedia Training; Edit-a-thon; climate change and environmental education.
3. We will create an outreachdashboard where we will assign articles to participants and also monitor their activities.
4. We will create a separate Whatsapp group where participants will be mentored after the events. This initiative will help participants to solidify their knowledge through knowledge sharing and collaboration. Also, interested participants will be added to the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub Whatsapp group.
5. We will connect participants to sustainable development groups in the country that will help them amplify their knowledge as Climate and environmental Champions. They will equally be connected to the existing Language Wikimedia communities (Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba) where they can better develop their Wiki Skills and promote climate change and environmental articles in local languages.
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, WikiForHumanRights

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

The project will provide opportunity for participants to add climate change and environmental contents to Wikipedia and it will also help improve the climate and environmental literacy levels in the state.

At Least 30 participants will be trained from each school. Most of the participants will be newbies and this will provide an avenue to recruit new Wikimedians for the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub and the Wikimedia Nigeria Community while raising environmental and climate change ambassadors. The participants will be added to a Whatsapp group where on-boarding information will be shared. The participants will be mentored on Whatsapp and in Zoom meetings in addition to the in-person training and edit-a-thon. After the events, interested participants will be added to the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub where they will participate in other Wikimedia events and campaigns.
