Wiki Loves Africa 2023 in North Eastern Nigeria

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

There are number of reasons that stimulate our interest to participate in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) 2023: themed "Climate and Weather" one of these reasons is being for the fact that two-third of our community members are from places in that part of Nigeria which experienced drastic weather and climate change that caused serious effects to the lives of the people and the environment causing disasters like flooding, bush fires, drought in some parts, global warming etc. which has been lasting for a long time. With contests like Wiki Loves Africa which is an annual photo contest held on the African continent, our community members will have a chance to share their story though visual photographs, audios and videos. Secondly, our participation will also be an occasion to introduce the Wiki Loves Africa contest to the existing and new contributors in the community of Fulfulde Wikimedians User Group. Recently, we have had a workshop/editathon where the community members where trained on how to contribute/upload recorded words as audio files on Wikimedia Commons in which nearly 1,000 audio files where uploaded and this made us to believe that the community members will participate actively in sharing with the world the untold African stories that can be found in the North Eastern Region of Nigeria through relevant media files. Lastly, we aim to increase the number of visuals and audio visuals of African origin for use on various Wikimedia projects. This will be the 1st edition to take place in our community will be the first edition to cover the region of North Eastern Nigeria.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Following are the major approaches/strategies we will be implementing while carrying out this event:

  1. Workshop: we will introduce our community members to the Wiki Loves Africa contest and train them on how to contribute/participate and also invite professional photographers in the region and introduce them to Wikimedia projects and give them room to participate in the contest.
  2. Photowalks: we will embark on a photo walks taking and gathering random pictures of about 150-300 different unrepeated, quality images related to climate and weather.
  3. Training sessions: another training will be held before the participants start uploading the media files to ensure accuracy and meeting of the requirements and to avoid having many problems with the uploaded files.
  4. Upload sessions: most experience editors from the community will lead and guide the rest of the participants especially the newly recruited ones during the upload sessions.
  5. Tracking Tools: we will use outreach dashboard and hashtag tools to track participants' contributions and also provide one on one support for them.
  6. Prizes: we will consider giving out prizes at the local level to the top 5 contributors as incentives to motivate them at the end of the contest.
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
