Academics and Scientists are one of the notable people of Wikipedia and its sisters' projects. The notabilities are established in their professorships, scholarships, members of international academia, reliable media coverages and being the leadership of a tertiary institution. In Africa, there are thousands of active and notable professors and scientists that cut across different disciplines. However, only few are represented on the global encyclopedia and it's sister project. To the extent that there are some notable African scientists and academics who have been forgotten after their demise. For instance my collaboration with @FuzzyMagma in 2022 led to the creation of article such as [Samson Gombe] who had died since 1989. [[1]] died in 2001, [Kalenga] who died in 2011 and [[2]] who died in 2015.

Also, the few scientists and academics who have found their ways into Wikipedia and its sisters projects are male. over the years, we have tried to also close the gender gaps by creating quality articles around women scientist and academics. For instance [Farida], [Florence] [[3]] etc

With this experience, we have created hundreds of quality articles around academics and scientists in Africa which can be seen here [[4]] and [[5]]. This made us to see the need not only to further train both active and new editors on how to improve and create articles for notable academics and scientists in Africa but to also establish a regional campaign titled Wiki Loves AfroDemics; an annual campaign that will focus on improving articles about African academics and scientists for sustainability.

Approaches

Training and Recruiting new editors: The program would train 50 volunteers on how to positively contribute to articles relating to Nigerian academics and scientists.

Closing Knowledge Gaps: The training would close the knowledge gaps by digging deep into some notable but forgotten Nigerian scientists and academics on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Closing Gender Gaps: The training would also equipped the participants with the necessary materials and guidelines to imrove and create articles about African scientists and academics.

Improving existing articles: Most of the articles about Nigerian academics and scientists are stubs. They lack appropriate categorisation, no description and are without images. The participants would be trained on how to successfully contribute to them.

Creating articles: The project's team are volunteers who have displayed extraordinary mastery of creating notable and qualitative articles. You can check it here and here. The participants would be highly trained to be able to identify and create notable and qualitative articles.

Edit-a-thon: After the editors have been trained on how to create and improve articles related to Nigerian academics and scientists, there will be a closely monitored edit-a-thon that would be used to massively improve Wikipedia and it's sisters' project of Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Lastly, these are the links that would be used as resources during the event;

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will run for a period of one month. Wiki Loves AfroDemics will consist of six different sessions:

1.Three days of an in-person (physical) workshop: Since the training involves creating articles on English Wikipedia which needed the right guidelines and trainings to avoid vandalism, There will be three-day in-person workshops aim to provide participants with a foundational understanding of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and the Commons wiki. During the trainings, the participants would be exposed to both general and specific notability guidelines, sourcing for reliable references, writing from objective point of view etc. This would be done by three facilitators.

2. Three (3) series of online reinforcement training: To adequately provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and abilities for editing on Wikipedia, Wikicommons, etc. One online facilitator will use the online portions to polish the new editors' flaws and improve their editing abilities.
3. After the two days of in-person training and the two days of online instruction, there will be a three-week time for the participants to edit and put their newly acquired knowledge into practise. This will be followed by a one-day review session. The two-week long Edit-a-thon will award winners with certificates of distinction and gift cards. A WhatsApp group will be utilised to encourage participants to amend and attempt to address any issues that may come from their newfound experience. Following that, a one-day physical training will be organised on the last day of the project with the objective of reviewing the participants' work, offering clarification when necessary, accommodating inquiries and clarifications, and presenting certificates to wrap up the project.
