Proposal to Hold "Wiki Loves the Earth 2024" in Kyrgyzstan

It is proposed to organize the "Wiki Loves the Earth 2024" competition in Kyrgyzstan with the aim of popularizing Wikimedia Commons and attracting new participants to Wikipedia, utilizing incentive prizes and cooperation with governmental organizations.

Currently, Kyrgyz Wikipedia hosts approximately 79,140 articles, significantly fewer than neighboring countries such as Uzbek Wikipedia with 260,000 articles and Kazakh Wikipedia with 236,000 articles. To update Kyrgyz Wikipedia, it is proposed to utilize the "Wiki Loves the Earth" competition, which will attract more users and provide a flow of photographs for articles.

Experience from 2014 shows that 8,500 people from 26 countries participated in the "Wiki Loves the Earth" competition, contributing over 100,000 photographs. This competition is one of the most effective ways to popularize Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms in the Kyrgyz language.

To attract a larger number of participants, it is necessary to actively promote the competition through media companies and increase the prize fund, which will encourage participation. It is also important to consider that many photographers are hesitant to provide their work for free, hence offering incentive prizes for winners will be a crucial motivational factor. This competition will be the first of its kind in Kyrgyzstan, making it particularly significant.

Conducting the "Wiki Loves the Earth 2024" Competition: Organizing a competition to attract photographs of Kyrgyzstan's nature and landmarks will contribute to creating new content for Wikipedia and attracting new participants. This will increase interest in participation in the region.

We aim to significantly increase the activity and update of Kyrgyz Wikipedia through the "Wiki Loves the Earth 2024" competition in Kyrgyzstan. The goal is to enrich Wikipedia's content with high-quality photographs of Kyrgyzstan's nature and landmarks. This will attract new participants and raise public awareness of Wikimedia projects, particularly in the Kyrgyz language.

The main problems we are trying to address include: 1. Lack of content in Kyrgyz Wikipedia: Kyrgyz Wikipedia lags significantly behind neighboring Uzbek and Kazakh versions in terms of article quantity.

2. Absence of high-quality images: Many articles lack quality photographs to better illustrate topics and engage readers.

3. Low community participation: Despite potential local photographer involvement, many are reluctant to contribute their work for free.

To address these challenges, the following approaches will be implemented:

  • Promotion through media companies: Expanding the competition's reach through collaboration with media partners will increase participant numbers and public awareness.
  • Increasing the prize fund: Offering incentive prizes for competition winners will help overcome photographers' reluctance to provide their work for free and boost participation motivation.
  • Collaboration with companies: Partnering with local companies will provide financial support and resources for the successful execution of the competition.

These measures aim to achieve the goal of enriching Kyrgyz Wikipedia with high-quality images, attracting new participants, and enhancing awareness of Wikimedia projects in Kyrgyzstan.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1) Promotion of the competition and related events on Instagram from May 1 to June 30, 2024. It is important for people to learn about the competition and its opportunities for publication on Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedia platforms. This approach also effectively attracts photographers who have high-quality images of Kyrgyzstan's natural heritage, enabling their photos to be used in articles not only in Kyrgyz but also in other languages.

2) The announcement of the photo contest results will take place from June 20 to July 15, 2024.

3) The final event of the "Wiki Loves the Earth 2024 in Kyrgyzstan" competition is scheduled for July 20. This event is crucial for enhancing the prestige of the competition and ensuring its continuation in subsequent years. It is also an excellent opportunity to attract more Wikipedia users in Kyrgyz, Russian, and English, including those residing in Kyrgyzstan.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of Kyrgyzstan. The Ministry will distribute a press release about the competition to various media outlets and organize a trip to one of Kyrgyzstan's natural heritage sites for photographers, encouraging their participation by capturing photographs on location. Additionally, the Ministry will prepare a letter of appreciation for the competition winners.

Such event planning ensures the successful and realistic implementation of the project to achieve its goals, making it significant.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details.
