Wiki Loves Folklore

Namibia is a diverse country with over 12 ethnic groups that have unique cultures and traditional folklore that are not widely documented. Some of the traditional activities are fading away in the midst of globalisation. This implies that some cultural practices in Namibia are facing the threat of extinction if they are not documented and made freely accessible to the youth and future generations. Thus, this project seeks to document our diverse cultural practices through photos and videos that will be freely accessible. In the process of doing so, as a nation, we will appreciate and embrace our diverse cultures in harmony. This will also be an opportune opportunity to raise awareness of different cultural folklore among us and for us to learn new digital skills that preserve our heritage. In order to achieve this, we will recruit volunteers who will be taking photos and uploading them to Wiki Commons. In return, the volunteers will be able to appreciate and be exposed to various cultural folklore, as well as participate in the preservation of their own traditions.

1. Marketing of the project using flyers and posters on various social media platform and podcasts
- 2. Provision for Virtual training Workshops, This will help volunteers upload photos with ease, and in return, we will have more photos that are uploaded.
- 3. Conducting of a national photo contest; this approach is appropriate in achieving the project outcomes
- 4. Photo-hunting initiatives: due to the fact that most of the youth are based in cities and towns, there will be a need to go to rural areas where cultural activities are alive and lived.
- 5. Price-giving ceremony: This will be a motivational event to thank all the top contributors; it will also be an opportunity to hand over the project certificate and awards to top contributors.

There will be a WhatsApp group to communicate daily with participants. Through their participation journey, their contribution will be tracked on the dashboard to determine their overall contribution to the project.

Did we reach the targeted number of photos from diverse backgrounds that we planned to add to Wiki Commons? If we succeed in achieving the set target, it will be a sign that the project is a success. I would like to be equipped with relevant leadership and management skills on how to run this type of grand and positively engage and network with fellow Wikimedians that are conducting similar projects in their respective countries.
