The overall aim of the Wiki Loves Rural Works project is to increase the amount of freely licensed material related to rural works in Rwanda in 3 districts: Muhanga, Rwamagana, and Bugesera. This is essential as we seek to document, preserve, and share: NGOs, institutions based in rural areas; jobs works related to the process of creating, inventing, and manufacturing culturally defined items, make-up, creative art industries, hairstyles, music industries, dance and celebrities, tailoring, woven materials production, agriculture and more. By encouraging contributions from media that showcase these elements. This project is instrumental in addressing the lack of documentation and global recognition of rural works and empowering the rural community to actively contribute to the global knowledge commons. This approach is important for Rwanda and very important for other countries around the world: Africa, Europe, Asia... Every country in the world has rural areas. Here you have the research

https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/rankings/rural_population_percent/ This shows the rural population, percent - country rankings, my country Rwanda is on the global rank 6 with 82.28%, and there is a deep gap in rural work documentation on open access. Depending on the minimum to no number of rural works on Wikimedia projects, this project will have a positive impact on reducing this gap, and over 100 visible rural men and women will have a Wikipedia page. This project will bring Wikipedia editing and awareness to citizens in rural areas, which will create great potential. Identified individuals from different institutions/NGOs and other economic sectors (agriculture, commerce, education) will become editors and valuable contributors. Recruiting new Wikimedians, especially those from different institutions in rural areas will create a great impact, we will organize an edit-a-thon to fill the knowledge gap on Kinyarwanda Wikipedia about the above-mentioned pieces of information that we are lacking on Kinyarwanda Wikipedia as well as on en/fr wikipedia. This will enrich the encyclopedia, which will lead to unleashing the potential of everyone to access neutral information and the implementation framework of this initiative.

If Phase I of the project is successful, more people will know not only about Wikipedia, but also about Wikimedia Commons, and new users will get involved in the projects. It will start in Rwanda, and we plan to extend it to the international level at a later stage.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

This project will spread awareness about Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons among people in rural areas. We look forward to partnering with various NGOs, schools, and private institutions in rural areas where we will work with their volunteers who are willing to learn about Wikimedia and how to contribute to Wikimedia's various projects, especially Wikipedia and Wiki Commons. We will attract new users to Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia and its sister projects. We are planning a 2-day training where we will teach participants about Wikimedia and the different ways they can contribute to Wikimedia's projects using the skills obtained during the Organizer Lab course. And contribute to the Movement Strategy recommendations: Invest in skills and leadership development. After equipping our participants with various ways to contribute to Wikimedia projects, we will launch a two-week Edit-a-thon competition focused on uploading images to Wikicommon and contributing articles to Kinyarwanda Wikipedia and fr.wikipedia/ en.wikipedia contributions are welcomed which will focus on increasing the visibility of open-access rural works.

We will have a physical session to reflect on the activity we have worked on and get feedback through the survey filled out by the participants on the challenges they faced and their willingness to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects, we will recognize the 5 best participants of the campaign and award them the gift cards, 2 special awards will be given to the best contributors from an underrepresented group and we will also provide certificates to all participants. Participants will receive ongoing mentorship and support to ensure that they are able to successfully create and improve articles on Wikipedia and contribute to other Wikimedia projects such as Wiki Common, and Wikidata. These activities will be carried out in a phased approach, with awareness-raising followed by recruitment and training of rural citizen editors from various rural institutions, followed by impact measurement. The project will also have a monitoring and evaluation component that will run throughout the project to ensure that activities are being implemented as planned and to adjust as necessary. This will help inform preparations for Phase II.

Learning and metrics[edit]

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

I expect that this project will increase the number of active contributors to Wikimedia projects through the training approach that we will use to train them and the intention to follow up, this project will also be a great opportunity to expand the network which will also help the participants to contribute with confidence as they will have someone to ask whenever they face problems while contributing as they will be paired with the experienced editors who will also guide them. Participants, especially newcomers, will receive ongoing mentorship and support to ensure that they can successfully create and improve articles on Wikipedia.
