Our goal is to bring people together through the Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition in Cyprus. This event aims to celebrate and document the rich cultural and historical heritage of our beautiful island. Despite its historical significance, many of Cyprus’s monuments remain underrepresented on Wikipedia. By organizing this competition, we hope to shine a light on these important landmarks and make sure they are accessible to everyone around the world. Through the Wiki Loves Monuments competition, we aim to connect people from different communities, celebrate our shared history, and ensure that the cultural treasures of Cyprus are recognized and preserved for future generations. This initiative is not just about taking photos; it's about fostering a sense of unity and pride in our diverse heritage.

Objectives:

  • To capture and showcase the diverse cultural and historical monuments of Cyprus on Wikipedia, including those from Greek-speaking, Turkish-speaking, Maronite, Armenian, and Latin communities.
  • To raise awareness about the importance of these monuments and their preservation, helping people appreciate and take pride in our shared heritage.
  • To encourage photographers from all backgrounds to participate, giving them a platform to share their work and contribute to the digital preservation of Cyprus’s history.
  • To create a framework for future Wiki Loves Monuments competitions in Cyprus, ensuring ongoing community engagement and collaboration in celebrating and preserving our cultural heritage.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Our planned activities for the Wiki Loves Monuments competition include:

  • Organizing a Meet with a Walk: We will arrange a meeting where participants from both sides of the border can come together for a walk during the competition period. This will provide an opportunity for everyone to take photographs of the monuments from their unique perspectives.
  • Photography Session: During the walk, participants will capture images of the various monuments. Each person will be encouraged to photograph the sites from their own viewpoint, reflecting the diverse perspectives within our community (indicative dates: 19/20 October).
  • Discussion, Photo Upload, and Coffee Gathering: After the photography session, we will host a gathering where participants can come together to discuss their experiences, share their photographs, and enjoy coffee and snacks. During this meeting, we will also assist participants in uploading their photographs to the Wikimedia Commons, ensuring that the images become part of the public record and are accessible to everyone.
  • Awards Ceremony: Once the winners are selected by the judging panel, we will organize a special event to announce and celebrate their achievements. During this ceremony, awards will be presented to the top contributors and winning photographs (indicative date: 22 November).

These activities aim to create a collaborative and inclusive environment, allowing participants to connect with each other, share their perspectives, and contribute to the documentation of Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage on Wikipedia.
