1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

1: Create awareness about Wikimedia projects in the Kilimanjaro community. 2: Recruit and train new editors to contribute to Wikipedia 3:Define “encyclopedia” and describe how that definition informs the style and content of Wikipedia articles 4:Understand the history of Wikipedia, the community behind it, how it is organized and functions 5: Be able to communicate the “Five Pillars of Wikipedia” and their significance to both readers and editors 6:Understand how the Wikipedia community and libraries share a common goal of providing access to information 7: Describe the unique definition of “notability” used by Wikipedia to identify appropriate article topics 8: Use Wikipedia article quality standards to coherently evaluate articles 9: Write a clear “Conflict of Interest” statement for their own user page 10:Comfortably use the Wikipedia editing tools to edit existing articles.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Participation in Training: these trainings are about 3 hours of live workshop-like sessions to learn, share and practice skills. Also, participants will have some time to review the material beforehand, which takes approximately 1 hour,, and engage with learning material after the session, which may take a minimum of 3 hours of their time. With this proposal, we hope that each participant will be part edit two articles in their sandbox and organizer will review them before publishing.

We will be organizing three trainings in the first trimestre of 2023, however this may change due to any logistical or community dynamics that may arise.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

First Events The first event introduces learners to Wikipedia as a reference source, an organization, and a community. We look at how articles are created, who creates them, and what guides the thousands of volunteer editors in determining what is appropriate content. We also consider the limitations of Wikipedia, with its own content gaps, biases, and flaws.

  • Learners complete a 20-minute Wikipedia Essentials tutorial that introduces key

concepts, policies, and guidelines Wikipedia editors follow when building Wikipedia.

  • The first session begins with unpacking the definition of an encyclopedia, We will discuss the Wikipedia community, whose goal of providing open information
  • participants will do further reading about Wikipedia’s Five

Pillars, and share their thoughts and impressions in a discussion forum. They will also make their first edits to Wikipedia by creating user pages for their Wikipedia accounts.

Second Events

  • Learners complete a 26-minute Wikimedia Foundation Evaluating Articles and Sources

tutorial, which describes how to read Wikipedia articles and sources with a critical eye.

  • Learners complete a Wikimedia Foundation 23-minute Editing Basics tutorial, covering

the practical basics of editing Wikipedia pages.

  • Learners complete the Wikimedia Foundation 7-minute Sources and Citations tutorial.
  • Following the live session, learners will add a conflict of interest statement to their user

page; make at least 1 copy-edit; and add at least 1 citation or external link.

Third Event:

  • Learners complete the 17-minute Wikimedia Foundation Contributing Images and Media

Files tutorial.

  • Learners complete the 13-minute Wikimedia Foundation Sandboxes and Mainspace

tutorial.

  • Individually or with a partner, learners will make a substantive content edit to an existing

article (suggest an article of local interest).

  • Learners will propose a new article, providing justification for notability

This project is focused on generating content for Wikimedia projects in the Swahili language, and developing skills that may lead to volunteer capacity to address knowledge gaps in terms of content.

We are going to promote a learning culture in all the spaces participants benefited from this proposal participate in and also develop a friendly space policy for the events we organize.
