1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

According to the Policy Book of the 2019 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA), the total number of registered legal practitioners increased from 120,006 in 2017 to 190,000 in 2019, representing an annual growth rate of 32 percent (https://thewhistler.ng/nigeria-now-has-197015-lawyers-as-law-school-graduates-new-set/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CAccording%20to%20the%20Supreme%20Court,growth%20rate%20of%2032%20percent.). However, there are presently few statistics to show a single repository documenting this data online. Moreso, a Wikidata query for Court-https://w.wiki/5d$9; law firms-https://w.wiki/4nc2; Judges-https://w.wiki/5d$F; and Lawyers-https://w.wiki/4nbi; returned only 1 result for law firms; 2 results for courts; 25 results for Judges; and 286 results for lawyers, out of 105,406 registered lawyers according to the Nigerian Bar Association (https://namati.org/network/organization/nigerian-bar-association/). Therefore, this project is targeted at improving and creating new items on wikidata for the Nigerian Judiciary; consisting of the Supreme Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, Magistrate, Customary Court, Sharia Court, and other trial Courts to create a free structured online data repository and increase visibility about them online. This project is also targeted at creating and updating existing Wikidata items about notable law firms, Senior Advocates, Attorney General, Benchers, Magistrates, Honourable Justices, Honourable Judges, Grand Khadis, and Khadis.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Recruiting 30 new editors (Law professionals) from the Nigerian Bar Association. This will ensure correct and reliable data is documented.

Increase the skills of 20 existing Wikidata editors.

Creating awareness about Wikimedia projects among law professionals in Nigeria; Many of the Law professionals are not aware of Wikidata and do not know its relevance in carrying out quantitative research relating to their profession.

Training participants on how to contribute to Wikidata; creating a Wikidata account, understanding the Wikidata editing guidelines and policies, and creating items about the Nigerian Judiciary on Wikidata.

Use outreach dashboard to track contributions and provide one on one support for editors.

Giving out prizes to the top 5 contributors as incentives to motivate them at the end of the campaign.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The project will run for a period of one month.

The strategies that will be adopted in carrying out the project will include:

1. Two (2) days of an in-person (physical) workshop.

Regular one-on-one support for the contributors (new and existing editors ) during the physical training.

2. Two (2) series of online reinforcement training.

To properly equip them with needed skills about how to create items on Wikidata.

Rhoda James is a Wikipedian also a member of the wikimedia Nigeria User group, she was the project lead in the wikidata for Novels and Novelist movement and has facilitated a lot of projects such as Reading Wikipedia in a classroom, 1Lib1Ref, and many others.

Bukky658 is an experienced Wikipedia editor, she is the founder of Kwara state university fan club and has coordinated several Wikipedia projects such as the reading Wikipedia in the classroom movement, 1LIb1Ref, she is also a Wikipedia Certified Trainer.

Linason Blessing is a member of the Nigerian user group and the Kwara state university fan club, she has facilitated many Wikipedia projects and has an outstanding contribution to editing Wikipedia and Wikidata.

This project aims at eliminating the gap between the Nigerian Judiciary data available and accessible to users online and creates visibility for the law professionals in Nigeria. The contents of the program will prioritize bridging the information gap by updating existing items and creating new items about Nigerian Judiciary to increase impacts that align with the strategic direction of the Wikimedia movement to fill content gaps on this topic.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

To ensure a positive outcome from the project, our target participants are law professionals who are members of the Nigerian Bar Associations.

The call for participation will be done through effective local communication channels where the law professionals belong using E-posters, and banners to promote the program on social media platforms.

All Participants will be sent an online form to get their data for registration.

During the project, I and my team member will be actively involved in facilitating the training and also making sure that the participants get the act and art of contributing to Wikidata items.

Also, the training is set to have 2 physical and online training/ edithatons to ensure that editors are properly guided on how to bridge the knowledge and content gap across various Wikimedia projects.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, After the events, participants will join as members of the Wikimedia community, this will keep them updated and encourage participation during wiki events. Participants will be added to the existing messaging channel for follow-up, updates, questions, etc. These participants would also be invited to future events.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

The General friendly space policy for Wikimedia events will be summarized and read at the beginning of each event to remind the participants and the organizers of the importance of a friendly space policy.

In addendum, we will make the following 24 hours phone numbers available throughout the events; The organizers, local venue security, local law enforcement, local sexual assault hotline, local emergency and non-emergency medical services, and local taxi company will be available.

We will be partnering with the Federal and State high court in Kwara; Ghalib chambers in Ilorin (https://www.yusufali.net/) and the Nigerian Barristers Association Kwara branch, to advocate and mobilize participants for the physical training.

We will also reach out to law professionals in other states through their various associations to join the campaign online.
