6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Over the past few years, floods have been worsening in South Sudan, which is suffering greatly from climate change. Every year, between 750,000 and over a million people are affected by floods. Half of these people are forced to leave their homes and move to higher ground. The change we aim to bring is to enhance knowledge and understanding of the impacts of floods in South Sudan and to address the lack of information about local biodiversity and vulnerable areas. Our main challenge is the limited awareness and documentation of flood-affected regions and indigenous species in South Sudan. To address this challenge, the following strategies would be adopted: Build knowledge about flood prone areas, soil erosion and excessive rainfall in English, Nuer and Dinka languages. Build local participants' knowledge on how to contribute flooding, soil erosion, and excessive rainfall content to Wikimedia projects. Build knowledge of participants and the public about local plant and animal species on Wikidata in Nuer/Dinka languages.

These efforts would empower communities with localised information and foster conservation efforts amidst the environmental challenges exacerbated by climate change.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We would employ the following activities to achieve the set strategies:

Build knowledge about flood-prone areas, soil erosion, and excessive rainfall in English, Nuer, and Dinka. Organize writing contests to engage new and old contributors to translate content related to flooding, soil erosion, and excessive rain on English Wikipedia to Nuer and Dinka languages. Add the local names for South Sudan plant and animal species on Wikidata. We would also engage participants on Wikivoyage to improve content relating to South Sudan locations where flooding and soil erosion are dominant. Build local participants' knowledge on how to contribute to flooding, soil erosion, and excessive rainfall content to Wikimedia projects. Organize local physical and online training sessions for participants to learn how to contribute to flooding, soil erosion, and excessive rain-related topics on Nuer/Dinka Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. Contributors would also be supported to benefit from the different global and regional capacity-building sessions organized by the campaign. Build knowledge of participants and the public about local plant and animal species on Wikidata in Nuer/Dinka languages. Organize Wikidatathons that would help participants learn about South Sudanese plants and animal species and their local names and awareness of the importance of building such local knowledge in Nuer/Dinka languages.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

George Levi [User: George Levi] - Trainer Wikidata 4. Likambo Isaac [User: LikamboisaacK]- Trainer Wikipedia 5. Lomora Ronald [User: Lomoraronald] - Finance managment

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

We plan to focus on the language communities in South Sudan, specifically the Nuer and Dinka communities on Wikipedia. We aim to translate the existing content and make it available in the local language, which is spoken by at least 60% of the country's population. Additionally, we will reach out to members of the Wikimedia community, as well as environmentalists and activists at Juba University who are interested in writing and discussing topics related to climate change in South Sudan.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

Yes

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

At the beginning of the year, we had a meeting with the community administrators and members to discuss our plan for the year. As part of the Wikimedia Organiser Lab program, I suggested continuing with the Wiki for Human Rights program, which everyone found interesting. Fortunately, the grants for this program have opened, and we are excited to apply. We have already prepared internally and held meetings to plan how the program will be run, so this application is a part of that plan. We have also made Wikimedia communities outside of the South Sudanese community aware of our upcoming event by adding the event to the campaign community event table on the meta page. We also informed the Anglophone Africa regional coordinator of the intended activities to share thoughts relevant to shaping the application.
