Wikimedia Awareness Drive

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Regional

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

Ghana and Burkina Faso. The moore language speakers are spread in different regions in Ghana and neighboring countries. Majority of the speakers of this language are from Burkina Faso, one of the neighboring countries of Ghana and shares boundary with Ghana. In line with this spread, we seek to create awareness of wikimedia projects to all these surrounding communities so that we can increase editors on the incubator and also train them to ensure quality edits.Ghana and Burkina Faso. 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The problem at hand is that, a good number of the moore language speakers and writers are found in Burkina Faso but despite the number, few are iintroduced to wikipedia through online activites by Moore Wikimedia Community. The main reason why we are embarking on this awareness drive is to introduce wikipedia and its sister projects across these regions, recruit volunteers, build the skills of the volunteers to be editors on wikimedia projects and also to create Moore Wikimedia hubs in all the regions visited so that we could be visible across all Moore speaking communities. This advocacy project will also pave the way for us to establish partnership with local wikimedia groups and communities to bring about synergy in carrying out wikimedia projects. At the end of this project, we will be able to: Create awareness for wikimedia projects in Ghana and Burkina Faso for the Moore speaking communities and beyond. Recruit volunteers for the moore language. Train volunteers to be able to add quality edits on wikimedia projects, Establish partnership with local wikimedia groups and communities

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

A good number of people in Burkina Faso speak and write moore language but are not aware of wikimedia projects and how they could contribute their quota in making the language popular on the digital space. Since the community is a brain child of Dagbani Wikimedia User Group, a good number of its members would be able to support during training of volunteers. Also, Burkina Faso shares boundaries with Ghana to the north and it is visa free to enter Burkina Faso and back without challenges.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Creating awareness for wikimedia projects in Ghana and Burkina Faso for the Moore speaking communities and beyond. Recruiting volunteers for the moore language. Training volunteers to be able to add quality edits on wikimedia projects, Establish partnership with local wikimedia groups and communities Create content on wikipedia incubator Add statement on wikidata Upload pictures on Wikimedia commons

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Geography, Language

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

The project is going to be coordinated between different countries (especially Ghana and Burkina Faso) which are geographically apart but the speakers are spread across these countries. These communities have diverse but interrelated cultural practices and ethnicities. With the goal to capture the cultural representation of these groups, we are not only to unearth the similarities among these cultures but would put them on the internet under open license for researchers to freely access.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Advocacy, Human Rights

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Disabilities, Linguistic / Language, Socioeconomic status, Age

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are new recruits from Burkina Faso and Ghana. We will engage them on their various talk pages and social media platforms especially Whatsapp where majority of the members are.

These participants will be very new to Wikimedia projects that serves as a tool to promote, digitize and revitalize languages via its sister projects.

We will keep our participants more engaged in the varieties of the things we will be doing so that we will have a bunch of choices to make. We will be engaging them on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia commons

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will educate participants on the WMF safety protocols and adapt it for the event and also couple it with some local rules that will guide behaviour and conduct of the event.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
