With a population of more than 207,190 as of the 2006 Nigerian census, Dukku is one of the largest local governments in Northeastern Nigeria. In addition to housing nearly to a million people, it also has a university, a college for health and nursing, writers' groups and associations, and a variety of other institutions dispersed across its population. Unfortunately, despite the positive developments in the community, there are very few editors working on Wikimedia projects, not to mention initiatives that aim to spread awareness of Wikipedia.

As a woman and a part of the community who counts herself fortunate to have found Wikipedia, I feel compelled to launch the first Wikimedia promotion campaign/training in Dukku for the general ascent of new editors, particularly Women. The reason for this is that in order to close the gender gap on Wikimedia projects, more women volunteers are required. By raising and inspiring the emergence of active champions of Wikimedia Foundation initiatives, I also wanted to increase Wikipedia and its sister project In Dukku's visibility among the youths in the community

Also, the proposed month-long activity will be tailored toward closing bridge the gender gaps that exist about articles on different topics. Additionally, with the help of editors; articles about notable local and international scholars, organizations, tourist attraction sites such as the historical and research places, and many more in Dukku will be improved.

Finally, unlike other communities where the Wikimedia community has been present and has conducted a number of training sessions, there has never been any training or similar activity in Dukku to inform people about Wikimedia projects and how they might contribute to them. If accepted, the project will contribute to the creation of Dukku's first-ever Wiki community gathering, which will be used to keep track of the editors' development as new Wikipedia champions from Dukku as well as current and upcoming activities of Wikipedia in the community.

Approaches

Training and Recruiting new editors across different higher institutions, writers and youths' associations in Dukku. We will train 50 members of the Dukku local government to boost the number of editors who contribute to Wikimedia projects. They will be trained on Wikimedia Commons, editing Wikipedia articles, and Wikidata.

Gender Gap Promotions: To contribute to closing the masculine dominations of Wikipedia editors, the participants will include 70% women and 30% men who are mostly students and youths from different institutions, clubs and Association within the target community. Also, the project would be tailored toward given priority to notable women articles with aim towards balancing the contents on Wikipedia and it's sisters' projects

Adding or improving local contents: We want to expand the representation of Nigeria's culture and history on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects by adding or updating local content from Nigeria on English Wikipedia and Wikipedia Commons. We would urge editors to write and enhance articles about Nigeria, its people, culture, and history in order to do this. In order to improve the visual portrayal of Nigeria, we will also encourage the use of photographs and audiovisual files from Wikimedia Commons.

Creating a community of Wikimedia Editors in Dukku: One the the facilitators for both the online and physical sessions, Ibjaja055 is an active and wikipedia editor. I will partner with the Hausa User group and Wikimedia User Group Nigeria through him to help in the execution of the project as well as in the creation and sustainability of the community. This is in addition to creating a WhatsApp group for the new editors.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will run for a period of one month to introduce Wikipedia to this community. Wikipedia Promotions in Dukku will consist of five different sessions with the establishment of Wikimedia community;

Two days of an in-person (physical) workshop: With the help of three of the four facilitators to be engaged, the two day physical sessions hope to avail the participants with the basic knowledge about Wikipedia. This will also involve account creation and on-site minor edits by all the participants.

2. Two (2) series of online reinforcement training:

To properly equip the participants with the needed skills on how to edit on Wikipedia, Wikicommons, etc: Two online facilitators will use the online segments to fine-tune the editing skills of the new editors, as well polishing where they have much weaknesses.

3. One day review session (final day): After the two days of in-person instruction and the two days of online instruction, there will be a period of two weeks for the participants to edit and put their newfound knowledge into practice. The Edit-a-thon will go for two weeks, and winners will get certificates of excellence. To encourage participants to edit and try to answer any concerns that may arise from their newfound experience, a WhatsApp group will be used. After that, on the final day of the project, a one-day physical training will be held with the aim of examining the participants' work, providing clarification where appropriate, accommodating queries and clarifications, and presenting certificates to conclude the project.

Creating a group of Wikimedia editors in Dukku: The last day of the project will see the creation of a community for sustainability purposes. This will be easily achievable with the help of Ibjaja055 and the rest of the facilitators.
