1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Bayero University Kano is the largest university in Kano and second largest university in Northern Nigeria. The university has thousands of students from Nigeria and the nearest countries. There is a need to conduct an awareness program about the Wikimedia Foundation at BUK to educate students and staff about Wikipedia and its Sister Projects and the program aims to create a Wikimedia community at BUK. There is a Wikimedia Universities Hub in some of the Universities in Southern Nigeria but there's none in Northern Nigeria. This program is the first of its kind to be held at the University. Many people doesn't believe in Wikipedia as a source of references because they heard anyone can edit it, this project will bring Change in creating awareness about Wikipedia and it's Sister Projects to the students and staff of Bayero University Kano, to make Wikipedia acceptable projects. This project will carryout online and offline with the lead of experience Wikimedian editors.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Creating Wikipedia and it's Sister Projects Awareness to the staff and students of Bayero University Kano, Recruiting new Wikipedia editors from the university, creating Wikimedia community at the BUK and Adding and creating articles to improve Hausa and English Wikipedia, Uploading files to Wikimedia Commons.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The project is a four days events,

Trips In the two days I and other Facilitators we will tour the University's main campus and second campus known as New Site, sharing flyers and discussion with staff and students about Wikipedia and Wikimedia Foundation.

Workshop

We will make a two days workshop immediately after completing Trips. On the first day We will make introductions to Wikimedia Foundation and it's projects to the participants. After that I and facilitators we will train the participants how to create account and help them to create their own Wikimedia accounts. Then we will train them how they can contribute to Wikipedia.

On the second day we will train the participants how to upload files to Wikimedia Commons and how they can contribute to Wiktionary and Wikidata.

Yes I have team,

  • M Bash Ne - I have organised Wikimedia projects in Kano, I also facilitated in many projects. I've experience in Wikimedia and organising projects. I'm the project's lead
  • Gwanki - Experience Wikimedian from Kano State, he have organised successful Wikimedia Promotions at Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano were I've facilitated. He will train the participants editing Wikipedia and uploading files to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Hamza DK - He's experience Hausa Wikipedia editor, he have Organised Wikimedia Project and has Facilitated and Participated in many projects. He will train the participants how they can create Wikidata Items and he will be the project Photographer.

The target participants are staff and students of Bayero University Kano. The project will focused in the students from Main Campus and New sites. I will create a special WhatsApp group before the event start were they can ask questions about the wikimedia foundations and I and other experience editors answering.

We will summarize and read genera friendly pace policy of Wikimedia foundation even before starting each event.

I will let my community members to know via Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa Wikimedians User Group Discussion pages, I will also inform them Via Hausa Wikimedians and Kano Wikimedians WhatsApp Groups.

I will work with one lecture who's my former lecture at Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal studies, he will lead us to seek the permission from the University's authority. I will also work with the Student's Union Government.

At the end of the project I hope the target participants have full awareness about Wikimedia Projects especially Wikipedia. I wish to learn if the participants can contribute to Wikipedia, Wiktionary or Wikimedia Commons. I hope this project can create Wikimedia Community at the Bayero University Kano.
