6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Our project aims to bring about a positive change in the awareness and participation of students at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in contributing to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The main challenges we are addressing include:

  • Lack of Awareness: Many students at MAAUN are not aware of the importance of Wikipedia and its sister projects as valuable sources of information.
  • Limited Wikimedia Contributions: Few students currently contribute to Wikimedia projects, resulting in a lack of representation of local knowledge and perspectives on these platforms.

To address these challenges, our main approaches include:

  • Wikipedia Workshops: We will organize workshops and training sessions to educate MAAUN students about the significance of Wikimedia projects and how they can actively contribute.
  • Awareness Campaigns: We will run awareness campaigns online and offline across the campus to promote the value of Wikipedia and encourage student participation.
  • Hands-On Editing: Participants will be guided through the process of editing Wikipedia articles, contributing images, and improving content quality.
  • Mentorship: We will provide ongoing mentorship to help students navigate the Wikimedia platform and continue contributing even after the project ends.
  • Measuring Impact: We will track the increase in the number of MAAUN students contributing to Wikimedia projects as a key indicator of success.

Our project's primary goal is to bridge the knowledge gap, empower students as contributors to Wikimedia projects, and enrich the representation of Nigerian and local knowledge on these platforms.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Comprehensive Training Program: We will conduct a two-day training program for both staff and students. This program will equip participants with the knowledge to create Wikimedia accounts, effectively search for articles requiring citations using tools like Citation Hunt, and learn various editing techniques to enhance Wikipedia articles.

2. Awareness Session: In conjunction with the in-house training, we will organize a one-day awareness session within the school. This session will invite both staff and students to participate and serve as a means of sensitizing the wider academic community about the project and its objectives.
3. Online Training: Following the two-day in-person training, a subsequent two-day online training program will be conducted. This online component will ensure that participants have continued access to valuable resources and can further develop their Wikimedia editing skills at their own pace.
6. Edit-a-thon Event: An edit-a-thon event will be organized, allowing participants to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice. This interactive session will provide an opportunity for practical application, and participants who demonstrate exceptional engagement and contribution will be recognized and rewarded. Certificates will also be awarded to all participants, acknowledging their active involvement in the project.
7. Ongoing Support: Active participants will receive ongoing follow-up support to assess their progress and improvement in the skills gained during the project. This follow-up initiative aims to provide continuous guidance and assistance, ensuring that participants can effectively apply their newfound knowledge in their academic pursuits and beyond.
