1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Most of the new editors they don't have knowledge on Wiktionary. They don't know how to create or improve Wiktionary articles. I've led a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Funtua last year where I gather people, many of the participants have created an account. I and other Facilitators we've teach them how to edit on Wikipedia. And Hamza Dk he led a Wikipedia awareness and workshop in Karur, Funtua and Kafur towns are all under Karadua community in Katsina State. To date there are active editors among those who attended that two events. Since then I have been receiving calls from participants on how to teach them how to edit in Wiktionary. Some I've started teach them but I never got to sit with them and teach them. It was I who decided to apply for a grant in order to re-planning a project to teach a number of participants how to edit in Hausa Wiktionary. This program will provide awareness to participants about Wiktionary to Wikimedia editors from Karadua Community like: Funtua, Kafur, Dandume, Bakori, Malumfashi, Danja, Sabua, Kankara, and etc, All they are local government areas under Karadua community in Katsina State. The program will also enhance Hausa Wiktionary by creating and improving articles on Wiktionary.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The aim of the project is to create an edit-a-thon training about Wiktionary to the participants,

  • This project will focused on train Wiktionary to the Wikimedians from Karadua community in Katsina State
  • The project will Also recruit new contributors to Hausa Wiktionary
  • Gaining more viewers of Hausa Wiktionary
  • Creating and improving Hausa Wiktionary articles
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The project will be two days series of edit-a-thon. Experience editors and I, including facilitators we will teach the participants how to make editing on Wiktionary and guid them to create and make editing on Hausa Wiktionary.

On the first day of the event, We will create account to new editors. I will introduce experience editor Gwanki to the participants, he will lead the workshop during event.

On second day I and other Facilitators we will lead the participants on creating and improving Hausa Wiktionary.

  • I {u|Yusuf Sa'adu}}, I'm a final year student of Hausa-English, I will lead the projects with help of these experienced Wikimedias editors.

Gwanki, Is an experience Wikimedian, he has organized many Wikimedia Projects in Northern Nigeria. He's an administrator at Hausa Wikipedia and also member grant commitee Nigerian Wikimedians User Group. Gwanki will lead the workshop.

  • Hamza DK, An experience Wikimedian from Kafur under Karadua Community Katsina State, he have also organised and Facilitated in many Wikimedia Projects. Hamza DK he is project photographer.
  • M Bash Ne, One of the biggest contributor of Hausa Wikipedia, he has organized and Facilitated in several Wikimedia Projects.

Many people especially students who use online dictionaries, do not know about Wikitiory and its sister work, they have little knowledge on how to find information and retrieve information in Wikitionary, let alone evaluate or provide information on Wikitionary and other Wikimedia work. Therefore, bringing this project will improve wikiotionary, students will have the experience of reading information using Wikitionary and improve their thinking and analysis.

The target participants are members of the Karadua Community who are based from different/various location and. It will be the first physical meet-up where all active members of the community will be gathering together. It will also be an opportunity to discuss how we can improve and contributed the sustainability of the Wiktionary in Karadua Community. And existing editors to an open account during Wikipedia Workshop in Funtua and Wikipedia Awareness and Trainin in Kafur.

  • We will follow up with the participants after the activities through Social Media Platforms and through daily check-up with their participants
10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will create a working environment based on the respect of people rights in accordance with the foundation's universal code of conduct policy, and We will adhere to the Wikimedia friendly space policy during the event. The Wikimedia friendly space policy and UCoC will be distributed to participants before the event starts. The event premises will be safe and conducive.

I will use the Outreach Dashboard to track and assign articles to the participants. It will also be used to measure some project metrics such as number of participants, number of articles created/improved, number of references added to articles, article views amongst others. And some other metrics will be collected manually.
