Based on the previous work of Chicala Observatory, according to their ebook entitled “CHICALA IS NOT A SMALL NEIGHBORHOOD” , Chicala (a Portuguese corruption of the word Kikala) in Kimbundu language was the name given to a surviving nucleus of townships located south of Cabo Island. This nucleus (facing the Bay of Samba) remained confined to what is currently known as “Chicala I”, a neighborhood located within the Cabo Island Commune up to the last quarter of the 20th Century when it began its expansion into what are today known as the neighborhoods of “Chicala II” and “Chicala III” – throughout the 1980s and 1990s, respectively – located on the continental margin within the Kinanga commune. The clearest expression of the reality at hand lies in the population itself. Whilst the population of the Chicala I nucleus is still of mostly Axilwanda origin, Chicala II and III have populations of diverse origins, both national and international. Population-wise, Chicala II started out as an expansion of Chicala I, as it connected with the “city” through lagoon-based aquatic means of transportation, although those initial settlers soon became a minority.

The Photowalk aims to register the history of Chicala with artistic photos as a way to contribute to the current Chicala Wikipedia page . Wiki Luanda is an Angolan informal user group created in 2022 that seeks to create visibility and representation of marginalized figures from African countries on Wikipedia, with a special focus on Portuguese-speaking African countries in order to create a historical redress that permits the creation of a cultural archive.

Problem/challenge: 1.Inequality regarding representation and participation of Africans on Wikimedia projects. 2. An even smaller representation and participation of Africans from Portuguese-speaking countries. 3. Limited information about Wikimedia in Angola 4. Awareness to the existence and potencial of wikimedia projects in Angola

Change that is sought: 1. Create greater representation on Wikipedia of people from African countries with special focus on Portuguese-speaking African countries, showcasing their contributions to their societies. 2. To retain the current four active editors by providing editing and training opportunities, through the administrative support of our partner Rompe Luanda, a arts center manage by QUeer African Artists including Pamina Sebastião

Solution /Strategies: 1. Bring together people who are interested in redressing the representation and knowledge gap and engaging in activities that contribute to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. 2. Promote knowledge-sharing about Wikimedia and its relevance outreach to partners that already develop activities around historical narratives reparation and photography

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We have established a partnership with Rompe Luanda since 2023 in which we use their coworking room and event space at their arts Center as our main space to organize edit-a-thons and editing sessions or any other event we need. By using their space we contribute to their monthly in house expenses (communal kitchen and garden; internet; space rental etc) as well as their cultural programme. This allow us to have a fix space where new editors can always find us.

This time around we want to expand our partnerships to other partners. For that we have established a partnership with Chicala Observatory, an archive about the history and urban culture of Chicala’s neighborhood, to support us in the photowalk as our historical guide. We have also listed a couple of collectives, institutions and companies as partners to where our cultural events will take place. We enlisted local initiatives such as: Papaya - media company to help us mobilize young professionals in media Ondjango Feminista - feminist collective that can help us mobilize young female feminist activists AIA - LBTIQ feminist collective - that can help us mobilize LGBTIQ people ELA Gallery - that can help us mobilize local artists Ndongo Gallery - that can help us mobilize local artists

Our main goal is to retain the current four active editors by continuing providing administrative support through our partner Rompe Artistic center and to organize activities that help us mobilize new editors

Photowalk - an event organized in partnership with local photographers and guide to unveil and register the history of Chicala neighborhood.

Editing session - in order to show to the photographers the impact their work can have on wikimedia projects, we will organize editing session with the photographers, to upload the pictures from the photowalk on Commons, and then improve the already existing Chicala page (https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicala_(Luanda) with a historical and decolonial perspective, as well as inserting the photos collected during the photo walk. This action on Commons has the goal to be the first step to creating a cultural/historical archive of the city.

Exhibition - we will organize three moments to showcase the photos taken during the photowalk , making the local photographers work visible as well as the photo walk results - such as the wiki commons files and the improvement of the Chicala's Wikipedia page . The event would allow us also to present Wiki Luanda user group to our target audience and the potential of becoming wiki editors, aiming to recruit and train new editors to upload images on Commons and edit Wikipedia. The cultural events would be organized in partnership with different companies and initiatives, rotating during the three months through different spaces so we could have access and mobilize different groups of people.

Edit-a-thon - after the cultural events we will host one edit-a-thon with the new editors that we mobilized, where we will train the newcomers, and create and improve Wikipedia pages.
