1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Over 250 ethnic groups make up the diverse nation of Nigeria, each with its own distinct language, culture, and history. The country is home to many indigenous languages, many of which face extinction. WikiNaijaNames is an initiative that will help promote linguistic diversity and support the survival of indigenous languages. For many Nigerians, their native names are a crucial part of who they are. They give people chances to learn about various cultures and languages and by promoting them on Wikimedia Projects, we are ensuring that Nigerian cultures and identities are accurately represented in online spaces and providing access to this information for people all over the world. The goal of the project is to provide content about Nigerian names for Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons in order to commemorate and preserve the nation's rich cultural legacy. According to an on Wiki Signal carried out, there are currently only 24 Nigerian names(https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907727) , 109 Surnames of Nigerian origin mostly Yoruba(https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907781), 17 Igbo Language names(https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907839), and only 2 Hausa Language names(https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907850) with few pronunciation and transcription , inadequate data on Wikidata and little or no audio files about them on commons. All of that is to be fixed by this project.

This project is a part of a larger initiative to ensure that Nigerian identities are reflected online in order to encourage equity and inclusivity in the digital world. This will ensure that the information available to future generations concerning Nigerian names is correct. The project will dispel inaccurate stereotypes and advance a more complex and positive understanding of Nigerian culture by offering accurate as well as diverse information about Nigerian names. Celebrating Nigeria's Indigenous Identity on Wikimedia can also empower Nigerian communities by giving them a voice and a platform to share their stories and experiences. As a result, there will be less divide between various cultures, and there will be more harmony and understanding.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

1. Training and recruitment of 30 participants of which 15 will be new editors and 15 will be existing editors. This training will enable them to create and edit articles and items as well as record and upload pronunciation audios of Nigerian names.

2. Provide the new editors and the existing editors with the necessary tools needed to improve Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. We will be providing them with all the necessary information they need to participate.

3. Training participants on how to contribute to the various Wikimedia projects that the training focuses on;

– Creating a Wikipedia/Wikidata account. – Understanding the core content policies and the general editing principles. – Creating new and improving existing items on Wikidata. – Creating new and improving existing articles on Wikipedia. Recording pronunciations and uploading them on Wikimedia Commons.

4. The outreach dashboard will be used to keep track of all contributions made by the editors during the edit-a-thon.

5. Giving out prizes to the Top 4 contributors as incentives to motivate them at the end of the campaign.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

1. Mobilizing and sensitizing participants on the various uses of the Wikimedia projects: The project will engage Academics who are linguistics and language Orators passionate about Nigerian Languages, Culture and Heritage in my Locality. It is hoped that the trained participants will go on to create more awareness and promote Nigerian native names on the various Wikimedia projects.

4. Generating diverse contents

– Edit-a-thons: We will carry out edit-a-thons to train 30 participants to perform minor edits (adding citations, Wikilinks, Category, Infoboxes, and descriptions, among others) on Wikipedia articles related to Literature topics in the Nigerian context. – Data-a-thons: This activity will be a series of Wikidata training/data-a-thon to raise awareness about the available data on Nigerian indigenous names to identify the gaps by introducing the participants to Wikidata query service and how to use it to track items. We will also increase awareness of the importance of creating these data as a worklist that will guide participants on how to create /improve items identified. Furthermore, participants will be trained to run queries to know the existing data gap and create and improve items on Wikidata. – Recording Audios with Lingua Libre: Participants will be trained on how to use Lingua Libre to record audios (pronunciation of names) and upload them on Wikimedia Commons

Ridzaina (Project Lead): is an experienced Wikimedian in Nigeria and also the General Secretary of the Wikimedia Fanclub, Unilorin. She was the project lead for the Let’s connect peer learning program in Kwara. She facilitated the Wikidata for Nigerian Novelists and Novels, was a co-facilitator for Reading Wikipedia in the classroom program for Teachers in Nigeria, Reading Wikipedia in the classroom program for Students in Kwara, Celtic Knot Conference Kwara, Promoting Nigerian Books and Authors, 1Lib1Ref 2022 Kwara and so on. She has participated in various Wikimedia projects and won several contests such as Wiki Loves SDG's Contest 2021, Wikidata for Libraries and Librarians in Nigeria, AfroCreatives 2022 contest, etc. She is a trained educator who is passionate about learning and sharing knowledge.

Bukky658 (Facilitator): is a fellow of Wikipedian in African Libraries, the first Certified Trainer and Project Lead for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program in Nigeria. She is the founder of the Wikimedia Fan Club, at Kwara State University and has led and co-organised several other projects such asWikiLovesLibrariesNigeria 2022, 1Lib1Ref Kwara 2022, WikiGLAM Awareness for Librarians in Kwara State, Wikidata for Libraries and notable Librarians in Kwara State, Wikipedia awareness for Library and Information Students in Nigeria, Wikidata for novelists and their novels, and then let’s connect peer learning program in Kwara. She is currently a Special Advisor of the Wikipedia and Education User Group.

By updating Nigerian names and their meanings on Wikipedia and Wikidata, WikiNaijaNames will support cultural diversity and make sure that the knowledge on Wikimedia is more inclusive and representative of the global community. This aids in bridging the representational and knowledge gap present in traditional information sources. The difficulty readers have in pronouncing native Nigerian names will also be alleviated with the help of the audio recordings that will be uploaded on Wikicommons.

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

This campaign targets new and existing Wikimedia from Nigeria and also members of linguistics and Nigerian languages associations across the country. During the planning stage, the project team will facilitate the campaign and will be briefed about the project and relevant resources to guide the implementation will be shared with them. During the campaign planning stage, we hope to create awareness before the implementation for prospective participants by creating awareness about the project on various social media platforms using E-posters and banners to promote the program online. During the project, the team will be actively involved in the training and ensuring that the participants get the act and art of contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects, Wikidata and WikiCommons. Also, the training is set to have two physical and two online training/ Edithatons to ensure that editors are properly guided on how to promote Nigerian native names across various Wikimedia projects during the editing contest. To ensure the sustainability of the project, during the events, new participants will be recruited. After the event, all participants will receive updates about related Wikimedia campaigns/programs to encourage continuous participation during wiki events. All Participants will be added to the existing messaging channel and mailing lists for follow-up, updates, questions, etc.

The General friendly space policy for Wikimedia events will be summarised and read at the beginning of each event to remind the participants and the organisers of the importance of a friendly space policy. In addendum, we will make the following 24 hours phone numbers available throughout the events; The organisers, Local venue security, Local law enforcement, Local sexual assault hotline, Local emergency and non-emergency medical services, and Local taxi company will be available.

There will be a partnership with the Linguistics Students Association of Nigeria, the Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN) and the Association of Nigerian Languages Teachers to help recruit new editors, and these partners will help publicize the project and its objectives to the participants from their establishment, which will boost their interest in participating in this project. These partners are passionate about Nigerian Cultures and Languages and will further promote the cause of this project.
