Research proposal

Description

Description of the proposed project, including aims and approach. Be sure to clearly state the problem, why it is important, why previous approaches (if any) have been insufficient, and your methods to address it.

This research will analyze how the usage of Wikimedia projects (Wikiversity, Wikipedia, Commons, Wikidata and Wikivoyage) can aid in the development of a local community of fisherfolk in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina (in southern Brazil), at the Pirajubaé Coast - the first Maritime Reserve in Brazil. We will, through participative workshops: 1) create quality content in thematic areas where there is a lack of information in the aforementioned Wikimedia projects (e.g. artisan fishing practices) while also identifying the potential benefits and obstacles for these projects to aid in developing “cultural syntheses” of socially relevant projects; 2) create and study the impact of methodologies of formative workshops in which the local community—working together with specialized partners—takes the lead in producing relevant content about their reality through the Wikimedia projects. With this, we aim to understand the most determining factors towards the institution of a) a culture of documenting at the core of the artisan fisherfolk community of the Pirajubaé Reserve, using the potential recording capabilities of the Wikiversity, Wikipedia, Commons, Wikidata and Wikivoyage projects; b) a culture that appropriately values and spreads the artisan fisherfolk’s knowledge; c) inclusion and autonomy of the artisanal fisherfolk’s community within a free knowledge culture; d) a space of collective memory of knowledge at risk of extinction, since this community of artisanal fisherfolk is being decimated by the social and environmental injustices they are facing. The creation of these participative workshops ultimately aims to train the fisherfolk on three main axes: human, political and technical. Our theoretical-methodological model is built on two main dialogic bases: the feminist pedagogy of bell hooks and the emancipatory works of Paulo Freire. At the end, we will not only create content for Wikiversity, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons and Wikivoyage; but also journalistic content to be published in Wikinews and Portal Catarinas; outreach at a Wikimedia research event and academic research groups; a new project page at MetaWiki: search and record of pictures hosted at Wikimedia Commons and published through social media used by the local community.

Budget

Approximate amount requested in USD.

50000 USD

Budget Description

Briefly describe what you expect to spend money on (specific budgets and details are not necessary at this time).

In order to finance the project, we propose a budget of USD 50,000 to be divided in salariat wages (to pay the team during the 12 months of execution) and operative costs. Of these, USD 45,600 will be used for wages and USD 4,400 for operative costs.

Impact

Address the impact and relevance to the Wikimedia projects, including the degree to which the research will address the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction and/or support the work of Wikimedia user groups, affiliates, and developer communities. If your work relates to knowledge gaps, please directly relate it to the knowledge gaps taxonomy.

The artisanal fisherfolk of the [Pirajubaé] Reserve are a symbol of resistance, in an urban context, of the immaterial heritage for protecting the ways of life, memory and knowledge of artisanal fishing, guaranteeing the sustainable usage of natural resources and preservation of the largest contiguous mangrove swamp area in southern Brazil. However, the knowledge of this community remains invisible to society and the Wikimedia projects. This project is an initiative that can contribute to: the production of content on underrepresented communities; promoting the development of the local community; raising awareness of the potential held in the Wikimedia projects to fund projects with social relevance.

Dissemination

Plans for dissemination.

Since we have journalists in the team, we will also work on journalistic advice through the publishing of press releases on Wikinews. We also foresee working together with Catarinas— a Brazilian independent journalism site—to aid in spreading journalistic content on subjects derived from the project. We will also use Instagram to publish photographic records, previously uploaded to Commons, to aid in spreading the world and interacting with the target audience of the research.

Past Contributions

Prior contributions to related academic and/or research projects and/or the Wikimedia and free culture communities. If you do not have prior experience, please explain your planned contributions.

The project is led by researchers at Prosa - Research Group in Education and Technology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. As of today, Prosa holds the accounts User:BahYajé_e_Y4guarEtã and User:Airdzleon, who have previously published academic content related to the ecology of the Wikimedia platforms. In “Contributions to the Debate about Truth as a Human Activity in Science Education” we showed how Wikipedia can improve trust in content through the peer reviewing process. We also developed the Masters thesis “Science Education and the Possibilities of Knowledge through Wikipedia”. In it, we researched Wikipedia’s content as a knowledge production space.
