Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) performs research in the humanities and social sciences focusing on Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, in particular Indonesia and the Dutch Caribbean. The organization is keen to contribute to the geographical gap of Wikimedia. Within Wikipedia, there exists a gap in content describing topics in South Asia and the (Dutch) Caribbean, particularly those that fall in gender and race categories. Similarly, while historical and notable content exists, it has not been incorporated into Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects. The underlying note is that within Academic life there is still much prejudice towards using Wikimedia.

What is your solution?[edit]

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
The solution is in two parts.

2020 has marked the 75th celebration of the end of the second World War and the beginning of the Bersiap and Indonesian National Revolution. Ki Hadjar Dewantara Was a key factor in the Indonesia independence and he believed that everyone should receive education. To honor his heritage and mindset which is in the same line as the Wikimedian movement ; I propose a research project regarding his archive.

In 2017 400 documents from Ki Hadjar Dewantara‘s archive at the library at the Taman Siswa Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum were scanned and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by WMID. In 2017 and 2018 under the wings of WMNL a group of volunteers transcribed and translated the texts.]] At the time I was responsible for this project.

This corpus of documents gives a unique insight in the life of Ki Hadjar Dewantara and is deserving of a good historical analysis. More information on this research project can be found here With this project we want to corroborate the claim that the Open source community, and especially Wikimedia, is valuable to Academic life and that it is possible to publish an academic paper based on such sources.

By providing an example that Wikimedia and research are compatible it will ease resistance to using Wikimedia in research. KITLV is willing to supervise the research project Letters from Tamansiswa Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum library. With this part of the project. We want to corroborate the claim that the Open source community, and especially Wikimedia, is valuable to Academic life and that it is possible to publish an academic paper based on such sources.

This project will also add and enrich information on Wikidata, Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons. The research corpus can be found here:

  1. Wikidata list of all documents
  2. Focus list
  3. Wikidata project page

Project goals[edit]

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. A meaningful addition to bridging the Geogap on several Wikimedia projects
  2. Providing an example that Wikimedia and academic research are compatible
  3. Engage with the Dutch and Indonesian academic and/or Wikimedia community to enrich Wikidata items through a editing contest
  4. As a result of this project KITLV provides a strong academic example on using Wikimedia in research.
  5. A website to make the archive accessible and engaging for a general audience.
  6. The research corpus will be significantly enriched and connected through the research project and the editing contest.

Project impact[edit]

How will you know if you have met your goals?[edit]

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (e.g. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

The Responsibilities within this project will be

  1. Be available to commit 120 hours in one year to the research.
  2. Complete and publish the research according to academic standards
  3. Online publication for the general public in Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia
  4. Communicate with the community on the project
  5. Organize an online Wikidata editing contest
  6. Website in English which will make this dataset more accessible for the general public in which there will be short biographies, photographs and other items to enrich the dataset.

Do you have any goals around participation or content?[edit]

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Project goals

  1. >300 new Wikidata elements
  2. Through the research project and/or the online contest
  3. Academic paper in English in a publicly accessible academic journal (WikiJournal)
  4. Data will be accessible on Wikidata
  5. Online publication for the general public in Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia
  6. Publications will be accessible under CC-By-SA 4.0-licence and the raw data under CC-0
  7. Academic paper in English in a publicly accessible academic journal
  8. Data will be accessible on Wikidata
  9. online publication for the general public in Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia
  10. Publications will be accessible under CC-By-SA 4.0-licence and the raw data under CC-0
  11. Website in English which will make this dataset more accessible for the general public in which there will be short biographies, photographs and other items to enrich the dataset.

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
The creation and implementation of the educational courses will take most of the time and this will require creating awareness of the possibilities of Wikimedia within an academic environment

The research will primarily revolve around the following questions: What is the context of the correspondence in the archive of Taman Siswa Dewantara Kirti Griya and how does this connect Dewantara to the larger geopolitical field before, during and after the Independence of Indonesia?

  1. Who corresponded with Dewantara on which topics?
  2. What was their function and political affinity?
  3. Does the view from the archive fit the general view historians have on Dewantara?

The project will have three phases

  1. Identify, enrich and connect all available data in the corpus. Relevant people, institutions and historic events will be marked. This will be done through an editing contest and expert analysis from the KITLV.
  2. Rrelevant items from the corpus will be researched further and biographies will be written for the website and Wikipedia and Wikidata
  3. The information from this project will be translated into an academic paper, Online publication for the general public and a website.

Endorsements[edit]

Do you think this project should be selected for a Project Grant? Please add your name and rationale for endorsing this project below! (Other constructive feedback is welcome on the discussion page).

  1. Support There's a definite gap on Wikipedia for the information this Wikimedian-in-Residence would add. Encouraging new editors from this area would help close this gap. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:00, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
  2. Support One of the organizers Michelle Boon presented this project at our regularly scheduled monthly meeting for the Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network (WREN) and presented this project to the 12 Wikimedians in Residence attending. This project seems to me like a conventional outreach project with proven achievable goals. It reaches a demographic which is otherwise challenging to access and which is unlikely to spontaneously organize to contribute to Wikipedia without an intervention. The money requested for this is relatively low as compared to some other intervention, like trying to pay some institutional partner in the region to establish a Wikipedia program independent of existing networks of Wikimedia community support. To me this seems like a stable proposal which is worthwhile for developing a community base in a content area and region which we are otherwise not reaching. Michelle is reliable for regularly reporting back to WREN with project updates, in case of challenges, and for general integration with other community projects.
