Grants talk:Project/Michelle Boon & Layka100/Geogap in South Asia and Dutch Caribbean on Wikimedia projects

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Free culture[edit]

Wikimedia is not a subset of the "open source community" as stated in the text. While MediaWiki is a free/libre and open source software, Wikimedia projects are w:free culture/knowledge projects, or open content projects if you wish. You can learn more at Free knowledge based on Creative Commons licenses. Nemo 13:45, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cofinancing and methods[edit]

Given this project is almost entirely focused on outputs which directly benefit Leiden university, including "Open Colloquia for all staff and students of Leiden University" and various forms of training for Leiden university, including a course with ECTS, I would expect the university to cofinance at least 50 % of the overall costs.

No previous experience with Wikimedia training is stated by the proposers and the only person who qualifies as wikimedian has less than 200 edits on Wikipedia, but the proposed outputs include for instance the creation of over 100 (Dutch?) Wikipedia articles. Please specify how you plan to recruit an experienced Wikimedia trainer: you can look at past Wikimedian in residence projects to find one which you consider successful and relevant, to build on their experience. Hi Nemo,

I can understand how you came to this conclusion that there is no experienced trainer involved.

However, I've been the community supporter of the Dutch communitu at WMMNL between early 2017 and late 2018. In addition I worked as a volunteer-trainer at WMNL since approx. 2016 and I still give lectures and training. 2016 was also the year I became active in the Gendergap. In addition I've been part of the VSN network since 2017

My strength is in teaching and training an offline community to become online.

In addition my activities are of a broader scope than Wikipedia. Layka100 (talk) 06:40, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal withdrawn by staff due to COVID-19 restrictions[edit]

Dear Michelle Boon and Layka100,

As you are aware, global public health guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic continues to emphasize the importance of staying home, canceling public gatherings, and minimizing in-person contact. As the gravity of the pandemic has become clearer, it is less certain when offline gatherings or travel will be safe again. Initially, we had requested that offline events be postponed until after September 15, 2020. However, due to increasing uncertainty over how long the pandemic will persist, many of our grant programs are no longer funding any offline events or travel until further notice. Project Grants is continuing to fund offline events and travel only at very minimal levels in projects that meet all of these criteria, as emailed to all applicants on April 11, 2020:

  • core components of the proposed work plan can be completed ‘’’without’’’ offline events or travel.
  • all planned offline events or travel can be indefinitely postponed, until the Wikimedia Foundation’s guidelines allow for them, without significant harm to the goals of your project.
  • the proposal is updated with a COVID-19 response plan by April 16, 2020, providing a brief summary of how these guidelines have been met, and how it would impact the project if travel and offline events prove unfeasible throughout the entire life of your project.

Staff have reviewed your proposal in light of these guidelines, and determined that your proposal cannot proceed in the current round. We are marking your proposal withdrawn from the current round, but you are heartily welcomed to submit this same proposal for review in a future round, with the next one scheduled for early 2021. You are also welcome to submit proposals for online events through Rapid Grants.

While we seek to promote free knowledge, our priority is the safety and well-being of the people who make it possible--you, your Wikimedia community, and the general public. We are acting with an abundance of caution to keep people safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We deeply regret that this global health situation prevents offline projects from proceeding as planned. We appreciate your time, effort and courage in applying for funding this round, and would welcome another proposal from you in the future, once offline event funding has resumed.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you have about this post at projectgrants (_AT_) wikimedia  · org.

Warm regards,
