B.Korlah/WikiFestival Nigeria 2.0
Building on the success of WikiFestival Nigeria Project and the articles created on different Nigerian Festivals, including book, cultural, film, music, and various festivals in Nigeria.

WikiFestival 2.0 is aimed at consolidating and keeping existing editors and new editors active on the successes gained and also improving on the shortfalls of the previous projects. Festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious or sorrowful heritage, culture, and traditions. They are meant to celebrate or commemorate special moments and emotions in the lives of people. Different tribes in Nigeria have different festivals peculiar to them, its coverage on Wikipedia is limited to stubs, many uncovered and many others lacking content to tell the story or enrich the experience of the reader or seekers of such knowledge This project still aims at bridging the Festival gap that exists on Wikipedia with a focus on Nigerian-related content, this event will bring together different Nigerians from different tribes and cultures writing and improving content on notable festivals.

This project aims to improve on some of the articles from WikiFestival Nigeria 1.0 and also create new articles on Nigerian Festivals.

Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors
  2. Increase skills for existing editors by writing independent articles about different Festivals in Nigeria
  3. Add or improve content
  4. To create, clean up and improve content on Nigerian Festivals on Wikipedia.

  6. To add photo content on Wikimedia Commons about Nigerian Festivals

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

There exist a huge gap in Nigerian Festivals on Wikipedia and even photo content on Wikivoyage, WikiFestival Nigeria 1.0 had attempted to close the gap with an earlier project last year which resulted in well over 220 articles being created/improved on Wikipedia. We will focus on writing new articles, cleaning up, and improving existing articles (especially those created in the previous project) on Wikipedia.

This project is very important to our community and Nigeria as a whole, as Festivals are an important aspect of our life and it is meant to celebrate or commemorate special moments and emotions in the lives of people. Different tribes in Nigeria have different festivals peculiar to them and some of these festivals are usually celebrated yearly, its coverage on Wikipedia is limited to stubs, many uncovered, and many others lacking content to tell the story or enrich the experience of the reader or seekers of such knowledge. Also, some of these festivals lack adequate photo content to further tell readers or seekers of knowledge more information, as it is popularly said "A picture speaks more than a thousand words", this contest would also focus on adding more photo content to Wikimedia Commons on different festivals in Nigeria.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

  1. The project will be announced to Wikimedia User Group Nigeria mailing group and social media platforms
  2. I will share notification with members of the Wikimedia Community in Nigeria via the official Facebook page Wikimedia User Group Nigeria official Facebook fan page
  3. With the support of Wikimedians from Wikimedia User Group Nigeria official Facebook fan page, Yoruba Wikipedia official Facebook fan page, Yoruba Wikipedia Community portal.
  4. We will share the information across all Wikimedia Fan Clubs in Nigeria, so as to reach their members for maximum participation
  5. We will also share this project on our social media pages to encourage participation by using paid promotions to reach a wider number of people.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

  1. We have a combined mailing list of participants from WikiFestival Nigeria 1.0, we will send a mail across to them
  2. We will share with the Wikimedia community in Nigeria as well as the Wikimedia Fan Clubs in various Universities.
  3. We will also share this project on our social media pages to encourage participation by using paid promotions to reach a wider number of people.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding. The contest would be judged through a point-based system, all contributions would be tracked via 'Outreach Dashboard' which all participants would be on-boarded on before the contest begin, all participants would also be required to put all articles created/improved on the Meta-Wiki page, so as to ensure easy and accurate tracking. This is the scoring system we are using: one point will be given for each photo added to an article, two points for each new article created, and one point for every 1,000 bytes added. Prizes will be given to the top three scorers. Prizes are online shopping vouchers that would be sent to them online, so the delivery should not be a problem.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects? The contest would ensure that Nigerian related Festival photos uploaded are photos without copyright infringement and also ensure that some of the photos are 'owned work', also there are some photos already on Nigerian Festivals gotten from previous Wiki Loves Africa events or photos uploaded on Wikimedia Commons, some of the photos would be searched for and ultimately used to improve Wikipedia articles.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below: NO

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project? WikiFestival Nigeria 1.0 recorded a huge success as participants were so eager to create content revolving around Nigerian Festivals. Following the success of the pilot project, we hope to build on the success and improve on our weaknesses so as to have a big WikiFestival Nigeria 2.0

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

  1. If at least 30 participants participate in the contest
  2. If at least 100 articles are created or improved on Wikipedia
  3. If at least 20 Photo contents are added on Wikimedia Commons
