Project 1: Central Bikol Wiktionary Edit-a-thon with Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki Recording[edit]

  1. Recruit new editors for the Central Bikol Wiktionary especially that it has less edits and entries in the previous months by new editors
  2. Increase skills for existing editors and utilize the Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki application as tools for improvement of the wiki project
  3. Add entries to reach the 5,000th word before the Central Bikol Wiktionary birthday and add audio pronunciations to at least 50% of the entries
  4. Celebrate the 1st birthday of the Central Bikol Wiktionary

Project 2: Wikiboses Project: Repository of Philippine Voices and Literature[edit]

  1. Further develop the existing page on Wikimedia Commons specifically content and visual aspects
  2. Increase frequency of contributions from different regions of the Philippines
  3. Compile up to 50 audio recordings at its initial phase

Project 3: Capacity building and Meet-ups of local Campaign Organizers and editors[edit]

  1. Conduct meet-ups to re-engage existing volunteers and attract new members & partners to the local wiki community
  2. Formulate and employ a series of skills development training that is tailored to the needs of both new and experienced volunteers
  3. Create a long-term strategic plan of local campaign organizers and editors for the future of the local wikiprojects
  4. Follow-up with previous partners to plan future collaborations between local community organizations and Wikimedia advocates
  5. Review on best practices in campaign organizing and project development on Wikiprojects

Project Plan[edit]

Project 1:Central Bikol Wiktionary Edit-a-thon with Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki Recording[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

There will be a series of edit-a-thons, each event will focus on different subtasks. First will be audio recording tutorial for Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki, second will be tutorial on the basic editing on Central Bikol Wiktionary, third will be Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki recording marathon, and lastly will be two sessions for Central Bikol Wiktionary Edit-a-thon. This will include both adding of entries on the Wiktionary and usage of audio files on Wiktionary word entries.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

This will be posted on the community portal of Central Bikol Wiktionary. This will also be announced through local social media channels of wikiprojects here in the Philippines.
Announcement on Central Bikol Wiktionary Community Portal

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Previous participants will be invited via their wiki talk pages and personal invitations will be sent thru email or online messaging apps. There will also be a call for contributors as this project commence.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

Yes, this will be both participated by two developers of the Central Bikol Wiktionary, Dang Brazal and Anthony Diaz.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high-quality content? If not, how will you support them?

There will be available laptops to be used by some editors as supported by the local Wikimedians here in our area. There will be a series of audio tests before we do the actual recording to assess the quality of the microphones which will be used during the event. We will provide the participants with microphones with noise minimizers through device rental.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

An evaluation form will be given after every session to check what went well and what are the specific drawbacks we needed to attend to. Constant engagement of participants cannot be assured based on the previous experience I have. One strategy is to recognize the best editor for every month and feature the editor on social media pages of the local wikiprojects we have. We can also feature the best entries for the "Word for the Day" on the Central Bikol Wiktionary Main Page.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes, but it will only be participated by less than 10 persons per session to maximize the working space and avoid unwanted noise during the audio recording.

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki are applications that are rarely used here in our locality. Aside from targeting the 5000th entry on Central Bikol Wiktionary, we are also planning on doing LinguaLibre and Spell4Wiki Marathon audio recording where we could reach 3,000 audio recordings in total. This is a good way to preserve our language especially since it is under the category of small languages on wikiprojects.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events = 4 events
  2. Number of participants = 20 participants
  3. Number of new editors = 10 new editors
  4. Number of articles created or improved = 2,500 entries on Central Bikol Wiktionary
  5. Number of audio recordings on Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki = 3,000 audio recording
  6. Number of repeat participants = 10 participants

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

  1. We have three spare laptops which can be used during the event. We can also reproduce brochures to serve as guides.
  2. Experienced Wikimedians and campaign organizers will track the improvement of the project and provide free tutorials.

Project 2:Wikiboses Project: Repository of Philippine Voices and Literature[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

The Wikiboses project was done to provide a free online source of voices and literature in the Philippines. The aim is to preserve the language while also reaching out to writers and different Philippine-language speakers to contribute to Wikiprojects, specifically the Wikimedia Commons in this instance. At its initial stage, we were able to gather a few contributions but what was considered a hindrance to its full success was the commitment of the volunteers. A new strategy we will be implementing is to transform the call for contributions into a contest-type to motivate and reach a wider audience. We would also require them to do the uploading on Wikimedia Commons so they'll be able to navigate and make use of it.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

A community of writers from the Philippines has already been notified beforehand. But this time, we will need to boost the campaign and make this known to a wider audience either on social media or printed media. Most of the contributors we are prospecting will be coming from outside wiki instead of the usual editors since this project does not entirely involve edit-a-thon but more on contributions of free-licensed audio recordings. The link of this project was already posted on the Community Portal discussion page of the Central Bikol Wiktionary.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

At the end of the project, we are looking at having more contributions from diverse languages in the Philippines. These contributors will also have first-hand experience on Wikimedia Commons uploading feature since they would need to upload their entries by themselves. Criteria for the best three entries will be included in the official announcement during the launch of this project.

Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

This will mostly be an online activity aside from the committee meetings we will be having. The committee will consist of 4-6 members.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. A better user interface of the Wikiboses. The entries will be categorized alphabetically and by language.
  2. A collection of 30-50 voices and literature from different parts of the Philippines.
  3. More pageviews of the landing page and edit traffic on Wikimedia Commons during the duration of the project.
  4. Free audio content from notable writers and artists in the Philippines and link them to their Wikipedia pages.

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We were able to provide the official logo of the project through the help of a previous Wiki participant from the 2nd Art and Feminism campaign in Philippines. We were already able to inform writers organizations from Cavite and as far as Aklan but we will still need to make these partnerships more official. This will also be organized by the key persons from Wiki Advocates Philippines who are experienced campaign organizers and editors.

Project 3:Capacity Building and Meet-ups of Local Campaign Organizers and Editors[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Monthly meetups will be conducted after school/workdays (i.e., Saturdays or Sundays) from December 11 onwards. Meetups will be held at cafes [preferably small local businesses affected by the pandemic] with a fast internet connection and a conducive environment. Sharings, updates, evaluations, brainstorming, planning, or orientations will start each meetup. Once these are done, participants are free to socialize and do wiki-related tasks. Short skills development training (writing, design, style & grammar, research, basic photography, and event organizing) may also be incorporated in these meetups.
These are also the wiki-related topics we are planning to discuss:
  1. Process of Application for new Wikiproject on Wikimedia Incubator
  2. Campaign tools (Outreach Dashboard, Hashtag Tracker Tool, and Event Metrics)
  3. Application for Rapid Fund
  4. Friendly Space Policy and Universal Code of Conduct

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

We will announce this project via Wikimedia platforms (community dashboards & pages), social media (Facebook, Telegram, Viber, Messenger), and text messaging. Volunteers will also be required to share it on their personal platforms. New and experienced volunteers will be encouraged to bring prospective volunteers and partners. Anyone is welcome to join these meetups.
Based on our experience, students and young professionals (e.g., teachers, librarians, cultural workers) tend to stay more engaged and dedicated to doing Wikimedia volunteer tasks. They have more time at their disposal, and they tend to look for causes and advocacies where they can dedicate their skills and passion. Past evaluations also suggest that this demographic (16-30 y.o.) wanted more regular group interactions in addition to online ones.
We are also interested in connecting with existing local advocacy and cultural groups to develop more organic and grounded projects and campaigns. They may also serve as our resource persons and network-builders for future activities.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

At the end of the project, we will have held 8 meetups. We want the participants to stay engaged and dedicated that is why we will continuously invite them to activities that would contribute to their personal growth and interests. We will also involve them in deciding and drafting current and future campaigns and projects. We want these meetups to be regularly held even after this project as we are trying to build a more collaborative and tangible community.

Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes. We will be conducting 8 in-person meetups. The expected group size of each meetup is about 10-15 persons. We will follow all local health protocols. There will be a registration and sanitary (temperature gun, faces masks, alcohol spray) station assigned at the venue’s entrance.
