Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

Fante is spoken by at least 2 million people in Ghana. It is principally spoken in the central and southern regions of Ghana as well as in settlements in other regions in western Ghana. Notable speakers include Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, and former Ghanaian presidents Kwame Nkrumah and John Atta Mills. Maya Angelou learned Fante as an adult during her stay in Ghana.

The Fante Wikipedia incubator and Fante on translatewiki was revived after the Twi translatewiki project. This was because the event hosted participants who speak Fante and would like to contribute in Fante and so we want to:

  1. Build a full language support for the Fante Wikipedia incubator, create more articles and translate all the most commonly used messages on media as one of the requirements for a new language Wikipedia request
  2. Build the foundation that the Fante community may leverage to start new projects in future.
  3. Start translate most of the essential features from English to Fante on translatewiki.net
  4. Engage existing editors
  5. Recruit new editors

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

We will be organizing two in-person training workshops to equip the community with the skills they will need to be able to participate in translations in Two Fante populated Regions in Ghana, Central and Western, one workshop each.

We will use this project as an opportunity to translate and proofread all the most commonly used  MobileFrontend, DiscussionTools, VisualEditor, ContentTranslation and Core MediaWiki messages to Fante on translatewiki.net.

We will invite interested groups and organizations to participate in as translators or advisors.

We will receive consultation from experts, such as teachers, linguists, or professional translators and also reach out to students currently learning the Fante language.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We will organize two (2) training workshops in two cities, one in Cape Coast (Central Region) and one in Takoradi (Western Region)

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.

You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?

For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
