Wiki Basics Training and Edith-a-thon Ilorin
As much as there has been numerous trainings on editing and creating contents on wikimedia projects from basics copy editing to adding images there has been a serious lack of structure and this has proven to be frustrating to newbies and some other wikimedians who are eager to improved on their editing skills. The goal of this project is to provide structured training most especially for newbies who are willing to understand how to contribute to wikipedia and sister projects.

This project will be tailored to the needs of new and old wikimedians with the training covering aspects of wikimedia projects.
Some of the areas the training will cover includes:
  • Account creation
  • How to correct spellings and typos
  • Sourcing for verifiable citations
  • Adding references/citations to articles
  • Adding commons images to wikipedia articles
  • Creating a wikipedia articles
  • Wiki linking articles
  • Uploading images to commons
  • Creating wikidata items and adding statements etc.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Series of trainings which will include 4 virtual training and 1 physical edith-a-thon.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

It will be announced on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Nigeria, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, Ilorin Wikimedia Hub as well as on social media platforms.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

This will be done through community whatsapp group as well as other social media platforms.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

They will need to have devices to connect to the internet and zoom application to participate in the virtual events.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

  • Godstime Elijah - (Project and Campaign Lead) - I am an experienced Wikimedian, and the current vice-president (training and development) of the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin. I have been a part in organizing several campaigns both within and outside the University of Ilorin Wikimedia community such as Art+Feminism, Afrocine contest, and Wikipedia pages wanting photos. I will be facilitating the creation of instructional videos/materials, virtual meetings and selection of speakers/trainers on virtual training workshops for new members.
  • James Moore200 - (Communications and Publicity) - He is an experienced Wikimedian and one of the nine volunteers who made the most valuable contributions to SDG-related topics in the English Wikipedia during the edit-a-thon [Prize Winner During Global Week] and Wiki4Climate in 2020 . He is highly skilled in social media engagements, publicity, and strategic communications. He will be handling media promotions for the contest and a co-trainer.
  • Prithee P - (Panelist) - She is an experienced Wikimedian and One of the nine volunteers who made the most valuable contributions to SDG-related topics in the English Wikipedia during the edit-a-thon [Prize Winner During Global Week] and Wiki4Climate in 2020 , she will be in charge of result collation and disclosure of Winners.
  • Major Lyte Team lead for Wikidata for Tourism and Wikidata for Media Personalities in Nigeria. He will be in charge of Wikidata training during the course of this project as an experienced Wikidata editor.
