Background[edit]

Brazil is a large country and is home to several cultures native to or from other countries. Some main cultural groups in the country are indigenous and quilombolas. Indigenous Brazilians are one of the most representative groups of the Amerindian peoples of the continent, being composed of several ethnic groups. There are 305 different ethnic groups represented by, approximately, 800 thousand indigenous, and they speak 274 different languages (IBGE, 2010). The Gavião (or Ikólóehj; Ikóló = hawk and ehj = collectivity) folk is an ethnic group of the Southern Amazon that reside next to Aripuanã, Roosevelt and Branco (Mato Grosso and Amazonas) rivers. Around 742 indigenous people reside in its lands and inhabitant speak a language know as Tupi Mondé, but some of them also speak Portuguese. There are still few works about the Gavião folk but Mr. Moisés Séríhr (deceased) exemplifies the importance of recording Brazilian indigenous culture: "I am sick and I will not live forever. We need to record the stories of the ancients. I know a lot and I want it registered, written" (available in this doctoral thesis). Unfortunately, the decline of the Brazilian indigenous population has occurred since the colonization of South America, caused by contact with civilization, occupation and degradation of their areas, contamination by diseases, among others. Currently, Brazilian indigenous are also being affected by the pandemic (COVID-19) that is plaguing the planet [1], so far have been recorded more than 600 deaths and 23,000 contaminated ([2]2020, August). Unfortunately, it is a tragedy in which are lost countless lives, cultures, memories, stories, languages ... And these losses are irreparable.

Another ethnic group that is suffering from the pandemic is the Quilombo, formed by descendants of enslaved Africans in Brazil. Currently, it is an ethnic group composed of 2788 communities [3] distributed throughout the country. Vale do Ribeira has the largest number of quilombos in Brazil, with more than 2,500 quilombola residing in the region, divided into 14 communities and more than 400 families. The social, environmental and cultural diversity of the quilombo are unique due to the formation of alliances between different African peoples (from the east, west coast and other regions) that remained in the country. Quilombos have a culture rich in traditions and were portrayed in the contest Wiki Loves Africa (Brazil was the first country outside the African continent to participate in the contest ever!). These communities constantly struggle for basic rights, such as ownership of their land, livelihood, health, education and respected culture. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made the life of quilombolas [4] even more difficult and have been recorded more than 4,000 confirmed cases and 149 deaths of COVID-19 ([5]2020, August).

Project Goal[edit]

Indigenous and quilombola communities are even more isolated this year and their cultures are impacted because of the current scenario, in which social distance is necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The idea of this project is to provide tools for these communities to share their history and culture, from their own point of view, in order to expand access to and disseminate the culture of these communities, reducing the loss of immeasurable cultural information. For this, we propose:

  • Develop videos for:
    • Instruct the creation of audiovisual content (tutorial) with simple and easily accessible equipment (e.g. cell phone);
    • Register the culture of quilombola and indigenous communities.
  • Inclusion of communities composed of social minorities in Wiki activities;
  • And increase the availability of cultural content, preserving the specificity of traditional Brazilian ethnicities.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

The production of the video tutorial on how to make quality audiovisual record with simple equipment (cell phone) will cover the following script:

  • Equipment;
  • Stabilization;
  • Lighting;
  • Scenario;
  • Audio capture;
  • Framework;
  • Focus.

A script will be prepared based on the culture of each group for the audiovisual recording of quilombola and indigenous communities, covering the main cultural topics:

  • Culture of the ancients vs. current culture (changes caused by contact with whites, enslavement, technology);
  • Stories and traditions;
  • Social structure;
  • Relationship with nature;
  • Religion and other beliefs;
  • Cultural activities (parties, dances, music, traditional instruments);
  • Educational activities (children and adults);
  • Recreation activities;
  • Productive activities (hunting, gathering, crafts);
  • Indigenous cosmology;
  • Eating habits;
  • Current challenges;
  • How Covid-19 affected the community.

We will also record audio with stories from communities and regional dialects.

Execution[edit]

The project will follow the following steps:

  • Development of script for tutorial and filming in communities;
  • Acquisition of the equipment;
  • Tutorial recording;
  • Recording of communities;
  • Post production;
  • Material availability (Wikimedia Commons, Wikiversity);
  • And promotion.

Result[edit]

  1. At least 20 audiovisual records;
  2. At least 20 audio recordings;
  3. At least 40 entries at Wikimedia Commons;
  4. "The how to" videos will be organised at Wikiversity as course;
    Scripts, videos, audio tracks and testimonials from participants will be also included there, as an example and to register the work from the first tutored group.
  5. The profile videos will be structured and transcribed at Wikinews pt.

Impact[edit]

  • The material produced will be published on the pages of the project partners;
  • Government agencies responsible for indigenous (Fundação Nacional do Índio) and quilombola (CONAQ) ethnicity will receive material to disseminate on their platforms, in order to motivate other communities to follow the proposed model.

Resources[edit]

Available resources

To increase the inclusion of social minorities and, at the same time, respect social distancing, we created partnerships with members of the indigenous and quilombo communities who agreed to participate in the project. These representatives will be responsible for receiving the equipment, recording and returning it, always respecting security measures.

  • The Gavião (Ikólóehj) folk is represented by José Palahv Gavião, grandson of the last shaman, Alama Gavião, he continues his grandfather's legacy by encouraging the preservation of the environment and conservation of the biodiversity and culture of his people.
  • The quilombo in Vale do Ribeira is represented by Luiz Ketu. Born and raised in Quilombo São Pedro (Vale do Ribeira, São Paulo, Brazil), he is a community leader, activist of the black theme with a focus on quilombola school education and teacher.

Wiki volunteers with diverse experiences also participate in the project.

The communities invited to participate in the project have a low purchasing level, so we will be sending the equipment for audiovisual records.

* Note: We are aware that purchase equipment is not a Rapid Grant practice, we checked the budget for renting for 2 months, time needed to shipping to isolated locations, recording the videos and returning the necessary equipment (cell phone with internet, tripod and external microphone). We find out that the rental price in Brazil is too high, due to insurance to send equipment to distant places, so renting the equipment is more expansive than buying it. Due to accountability, we are suggesting the buy.

The equipment acquired to this project, after finished the project, will be used again in other similar projects, housed by the foto.wiki.br group (on the process of being a WUG). If by any chance the group is not officiated by the end of the project, the Wiki Movimento Brasil is aware of the situation and agrees to manage the equipment.
