Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Create awareness about the Wikimedia projects.
  2. Recruit new editors
  3. Increase skills for existing editors
  4. Add and improve contents

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

I will organise awareness session and a series of edit-a-thons for 3 days; that is, the first day is for awareness while the remaining two days for trainings on how to edit Wikipedia and for guiding all the participants to create a total of 200 articles.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

There are established social media channels (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram) for the Wikimedians in Nigeria which the community will be notified about the proposal. Also I will inform the community on the Hausa Discussion page as well as that of the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Social media channels, physical outreach to the campus populace and the students' unions in the university.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

Yes there are experienced editors who can also help me in the training of new editors throughout the sessions.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Some of the participants may not have the required skill but I and other facilitators will be there for them. We will take a step by step approach in teaching them the necessary articles editing and creating steps for them to learn and engage in contributing to Wikipedia continuously not just during the event. Also, the participants will be provided with Internet data that will be used during the edit-a-thon sessions.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

I will open social platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram groups and ask all participants to join on the day of the trainings, during the participants registration session. So that to continue engaging them event after the event.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

It is here

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

  • The project will achieve a target outcome of 200 improved/newly created articles across three language Wikipedia(s) including English within the 2 days of the training workshops/edit-a-thons, i.e every participant will be creating a minimum of 2 articles per day within the period of the trainings.
  • This is the first event that we are looking forward to engage academics and students from Northeast Region of Nigeria. The project will have the series of three events. Here is the plan of the project:
  • First event - Awareness creation and training on the Wikimedia Movement and its projects
  • Second event - Intensive training on Wikipedia, practical hands on experience on English, Fulfulde and Hausa Wikipedia(s) + improving contents
  • Third event - Improving content based on previous contributions/creating new articles and skills acquired assessment

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events = 3
  2. Number of participants = 40
  3. Number of new editors = 30
  4. Number of articles created or improved = 200
