Project Goal
[edit]Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
- Recruit new editors in Rivers State as a working group for Wikimedia related activities in the state so as to bridge the identified knowledge gap around the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
- Build a team of Wikimedia Editors at the University of Port Harcourt
- Add or improve content to bridge the identified knowledge gap around Niger Delta contents on the English Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- We plan to organize series of Wikipedia training to equip the new members on how to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects.
- We plan to organize an edit-a-thon to enable the trained editors to practice some of the knowledge imparted during the training.
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.
- I have notified the school authority about this project and they are excited about it.
- I have identified staff and students that will pioneer the training at the institution.
- I have informed the Wikimedia community about this project via its
- [ https://chat.whatsapp.com/DzyNJFryYIU44gq3RzU9nw%7C whatsapp group]
- [ https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria%7C discussion page at Wikimedia User Group Nigeria]
3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
- Information about the Wikipedia training and edit-a-thon will be disseminated using fliers and social media channels.
- The participants will be onboarded in a WhatsApp group to ease communication in the community before, during and after the event.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT
Yes.
- We have Omorodion1 who is an experienced Wikimedia editor. He has participated in several Wikimedia events in Nigeria and he is the organizer of the Open Semester Training for staff and students of Samuel Adegboyega University
- Ugwulebo will also join in coordinating this project.
5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- The participants are newbies, so do not have the required skills. I have therefore engaged an experienced Wikimedian to help fill this gap.
- The participants have their personal laptops which they use for academic activities in the university.
6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- I plan to create Whatsapp group for communication
- I will create dashboard for assigning of assignment to participants of the event.
7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
