Wikipedia Pages Wanting Pictures Contest in Nigeria[edit]

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Pictures Contest in Nigeria is annual campaign where Wikipedians in Nigeria add photos to articles lacking images. This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various WP photography contests, organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages. Photos improve readers experience, illustrate content, and make articles engaging. The campaign would also help sharpen the skills of new and existing editors.

It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.

The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.

If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.

Request for Unblock and IP Address Exemption - Autoblock Affected[edit]

Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: Dear Jon_Kolbert I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to respectfully request an unblock and IP address exemption for the block ID #339506 that has been applied to my IP address (34.66.241.0). I believe that I have been affected by an automated feature known as the autoblock.

Upon reviewing the block notice, I noticed that the block reason stated "Open Proxy/Webhost: Contact stewards if you are affected." However, I assure you that I am not using an open proxy or web hosting service for any malicious or unauthorized purposes. The autoblock seems to have erroneously associated my IP address with this block reason.

I kindly request your assistance in removing the autoblock and granting me access to the MetaWiki platform. Furthermore, I would appreciate an exemption for my IP address to avoid any future disruptions caused by similar autoblocks to enable me update existing campaign documentation pages coordinated by me.

I understand the importance of maintaining a secure environment on MetaWiki and fully support the measures taken to prevent abuse. However, I assure you that I have no intentions of engaging in any activities that would compromise the integrity or safety of the platform.

Please find the necessary details below for your reference:

  • Current IP Address: 34.66.241.0
  • Block ID: #339506

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this situation and appreciate your time and consideration in reviewing my request. Should you require any further information or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am committed to resolving this matter in a prompt and respectful manner.

Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to a positive resolution. Bukky658 (talk) 17:13, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock reason: I have granted local IP block exemption, which should allow you to make a request for global IP block exemption, per those instructions.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:35, 28 June 2023 (UTC) [reply]

Art+Feminism: Feb 15 online edit-a-thon campaign launch and upcoming conversations[edit]

Art+Feminism Virtual Tables campaign illustration

We have some exciting events coming up that we’d love to share with you!

At Art+Feminism, we believe that as feminist editors, our strength is in collective action. When we edit together, we share resources, knowledge, and skills; in doing so, we form a defense against harassment within the Wikiverse and beyond. Alongside our initiatives to close diversity gaps and create a safer Wikipedia, Art+Feminism remains committed to doing our part. This year that includes creating more virtual spaces for us to connect with one another, share knowledge, and edit together.

To start, join Art+Feminism and Wiki Editoras Lx on 15 February to discuss and practice strategies for collective editing. This event kicks off our series of virtual editing tables for our Year 11 campaign. You can see our full schedule here and register today.

We’ll also be hosting two special conversations: Online & On the Ground: Abortion Activism in Maryland and Collective Imagination + Radical Futures: Kansas City Organizers on Making Art & Building Power. These online events are open to all and we hope to see you there!

If you’d like to join the campaign by hosting your own A+F event but haven’t yet, it’s not too late! You can view our campaign resources here and send us an email to let us know you’re joining.

Can't see email[edit]

I have a notification saying that you sent me an email 4 days ago, but I can't see any email in my inbox. Just letting you know :) Dsp13 (talk) 12:34, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Dsp13 thanks for reaching out via my talk. It must have been an invitation sent out for the EmpowerHer Edithathon invitation sent out via massmail as part of a test for the event invitation tool(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event_Invitations_Consultation_Hours) currently been developed by the Campaigns Product Team Team and your username was shared as part of those who had previously made relevant contributions to some of the suggested article lists created for the EmpowerHer Edithathon 2024. Bukky658 (talk) 21:35, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bukky658! I received the email, thanks. I really don't have much time to do Wikipedia editing beyond minimal "what seems necessary" editing, but the scope of the editathon makes it very tempting to do some editing if nobody else does things that I see as needing to be done. Such as w:arms control in Africa, which has been a red link at w:User:Boud/Draft:WikiProject_Peace for a long time. I would very much hope to lose the competition :), and I'll least post info about the editathon on the w:Fediverse. Boud (talk) 20:53, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, it's truly encouraging to learn that a Wikipedia project focused on peace exists. In today's context, I believe the importance of having articles on arms control cannot be overstated. Perhaps we could consider organizing a campaign or a live edit session around this theme. Such initiatives could significantly motivate Wikimedians to contribute more actively. Your idea of focusing on arms control, especially in Africa, as highlighted in your message, resonates with the urgency and relevance of these topics. Let's explore how we can collaboratively enhance the coverage of these crucial issues on Wikipedia. And thanks for considering sharing on Fediverse. Bukky658 (talk) 08:41, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For the moment it's only a draft project - and even though it's currently in my user space, I obviously don't WP:OWN it - I would be glad for others to take over... We'll see if some time people become active enough. Glad you agree on the importance.
A separate issue, in terms of organising, which is obviously too late for this particular campaign but is important in the long term, the use of WhatsApp as a communicator is not the greatest choice, given Meta/Facebook's role in amplifying the Rohingya and Tigrayan genocides, and given the security and privacy needs of participants. I'm unlikely to be someone at high risk, but some participants likely are at high risk. I would strongly suggest that next time you look at something like the Matrix protocol. Software that uses the protocol is usually FOSS, so it is much more verifiable than WhatsApp, and is generally (not absolutely) likely to be more secure and under the control of the participants. You could ask any tech group you trust - e.g. Wikimedia techies or an Africa-based groups of techies if they have the time and other resources - to run a Matrix server to avoid being dependent on matrix.org. The July 2022 estimate of the people using matrix protocol servers that are federated with matrix.org was about 64 million. Boud (talk) 00:09, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
