Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2023

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

This proposal is for a local campaign in the Enugu Wikipedia hub for the fourth edition of "Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos," an annual campaign aimed at enhancing Wikipedia articles by adding photos to those that lack visual content. This project will leverage the vast collection of digital media files gathered from various Wikimedia photography contests, as well as photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community. The inclusion of photographs will significantly improve the reader's experience, enrich the content, and enhance the instructional and engaging nature of the articles.

Despite the tremendous success of previous initiatives, such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, and other photography contests, the utilization of the donated images on Wikipedia articles remains relatively low. Although the Wikimedia Commons currently hosts millions of photo images, only a small fraction has been incorporated into Wikipedia article pages. This discrepancy presents a significant opportunity to bridge the gap and maximize the potential impact of the Wikimedia Commons.

The primary objective of this project is to actively encourage Wikipedia editors within our community to contribute their time and effort towards adding relevant and high-quality photographs to articles lacking visual representation. Through this mobilization, we aim to address the vast reservoir of unused photos and ensure they find their way into Wikipedia articles, enriching the content and improving the overall user experience.

Through strategic collaboration with Wikimedia photography contests, advocacy programs, and organized photowalks, we will curate a diverse range of photos that align with the needs of Wikipedia articles. Additionally, we will establish channels of communication and collaboration with contest organizers, photographers, and relevant community members to facilitate the seamless integration of these images into Wikipedia.

The anticipated outcomes of the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2023 campaign include a significant increase in the number of photos added to Wikipedia articles, greater visual appeal and engagement for readers, and improved educational value. By highlighting the importance of visual content in enhancing knowledge dissemination, this project will contribute to the continued growth and relevance of Wikipedia as a reliable and comprehensive information resource.

To achieve these objectives, we are seeking funding support to cover various aspects of the campaign, including outreach and awareness activities and community engagement initiatives. The requested funding will enable us to allocate dedicated resources, implement robust strategies, and sustain the momentum of this essential project.

We believe that by investing in the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2023 campaign, we can bridge the gap between the vast collection of photos in the Wikimedia Commons and the underutilization of these visual assets on Wikipedia articles. This initiative will not only enhance the visual appeal and educational value of Wikipedia but also foster a sense of collaboration and community engagement among Wikipedia editors and the broader Wikimedia community.

  • Supported. Baruck has been a Wikipedia enthusiastic. He has always been seeking ways of improving Wikipedia and making Wikipedia experience of users interesting. Moreover, there are many pictures uploaded by our community members to information commons that need to be attached to their related text contnent. These pictures will remain useless if they are allowed to exist independent of the text they are supposed to help to clarify.Ngozi osadebe (talk) 13:49, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
