Grants talk:IEG/Wikiscience

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Thanks for submitting! First round of feedback on your idea[edit]

Hi Will,
Thanks for submitting this idea, Wikiscience sounds interesting! From what you've drafted so far, it seems like you're interested in creating a new project modeled upon Wikipedia, rather than something that improves or is incorporated into an existing Wikimedia project. If that is the case, your idea will likely fall outside of the scope of eligible kinds of projects that Individual Engagement Grants can fund. There is another process for proposing new sister projects for Wikimedia (the latest addition to the family was Wikivoyage), so I'd encourage you to have a look there as well - it would be best to propose your idea for starting a new sister project in that forum before requesting funding. Or, if I've misunderstood your idea or you can provide more information about how this proposal is a good fit with the eligibility and selection criteria, feel free to respond here or add more information to your proposal page. Thanks! Siko (WMF) (talk) 06:43, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nice idea, and one whose core elements I am fully supporting, but I share Siko's reservations about the fit to the grant scheme's scope and strongly recommend that the proposal should incorporate at least a cursory overview of past or existing efforts in the same direction (e.g. on Meta or on Wikiversity). An analysis of why these other efforts have not (yet) taken off might also be useful in shaping future versions of this proposal, which I would like to encourage. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 08:12, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've actually collaborated on writing scientific journal articles in Wikiversity, which were later peer reviewed and published outside of the project. I was not, however, very satisfied with the process, and would love to see a better way to do this. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I'm glad to see people thinking about it :) Kaldari (talk) 19:19, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ineligible for IEG at present, but please keep workshopping in IdeaLab[edit]

I've marked the status of this as ineligible because it does seem like an entirely new Wikimedia sister project is outside our present scope (at least, until approved by the community, then I suppose it could be proposed for a grant to enact the community's consensus or something...I'm just guessing that will not happen before February 15th 2013). However, it seems like a great idea to keep discussing and growing in the Grants:IdeaLab. You will still find it in the list of ideas in the IdeaLab, so let's see where the conversation goes about this thing you've discovered, Will :-) Siko (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
