GAC members who support this request with adjustments[edit]

  1. I am a little bit skeptical that this budget will be sufficient for 12 meet-ups. Please confirm me that you have done your calculation correctly. --Ilario (talk) 07:34, 3 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ilario, yes I believe it's the correct sum. We have reach out for lots of different resource, no matter it's monetary or non-monetary, to reduce the sum of this grant. Is this too low in comparison of other proposal? --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 11:22, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  1. (at this time) Very long reply time, see below --Packa (talk) 08:36, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply, the reason is explained below, thank you. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 11:22, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Currency should be changed to USD. Google tell me that 15500 TWD = 500 USD. Is this right?
Thanks. I've added the USD equivalent. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:06, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Would be good to mark which part of the budget items are about to be donated by "PingBaiDaiWan" and which by WMF grant.
  • Regarding furnishing room - there are costs for this but no costs of renting the room. Is "PingBaiDaiWan" about to provide it for free?

Polimerek (talk) 10:25, 11 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any problem with answering to Polimerek’s and Alex’s comment? I thing when you plan to start this project next month you should respond quickly. --Packa (talk) 18:25, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Liang. But can you explain me, why you were not able to replay I one month? If you do not communicate, I am not sure you will be able to lead this project. When managing this room you need act more frequently than once a month. --Packa (talk) 08:34, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Packa. Thank you for the effort of reviewing our proposal. I am sorry that my frequency of reply is slow. The reason of low speed response is because of the grantee for this project, Reke and I, are both male. And we would like to ask the female participants in Taiwan for their genuine response instead of the single minded response from both of us. This may take a long time since we only have physical gathering once a month. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 10:21, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Community comments[edit]

I support this application. However, it's hard to see exactly what will be going on during the meetings—how long and what structure of activities will occur during them.

Have you identified areas of female-oriented topics on zh.WP that need work, and will this inform the thematic content of the meetings? Tony (talk) 09:44, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

When Reke and I walk through 5 female articles on Chinese Wikipedia in 22 April 2015, the female participants noticed that female articles is different from male articles such as the focus on family and private issues in the tone of the articles (please refer to the Reke's note on meeting 2015-04-21). And also, the lack of female scientists in Chinese Wikipedia. Since most of the participants are new comers, we want to make them feel empowered and work on the articles they have resonance with. We will build up their ability to write Wikipedia along the way. In the end, we want to solve the issue of lack of offline female gathering in Taiwan.
Thanks to Reke, he has already written six notes for the documentation and promotion of the gathering. Please read the following links ( It's all in Chinese for now, sorry there is not enough time for me to translate right away. But if you feel interested in these notes, let me know which one you want to see by my translation, I will do my best to translate asap. ):

Thanks, Shangkuanic. In which case, will you make this an explicit theme of the activities? Thank you, by the way, for writing the application and answering here in English—it's not easy, I know. I'll try google-translate on your links soon. Tony (talk) 13:58, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tony, thanks for the question. I have not discussed with Reke, so this will be only my vision of this project. I think I am interested and capable of doing translation, that is my major contribution to the Wikimedia community. So if any female participants who is interested with translation task force. I am happy to be the partner or mentor to walk through the process, such as the user interface such as using Visual Editor, content translation, or the community buffer. My role here as I imagine, would be the volunteer in the information desk, to provide guidance and experience for the participants. By the way, there is a new note from Reke

Updates - there are two new blogs by our female participant, Jeane, for her experience on campaigning and bug reporting.
  1. 維基百科中的女孩要怎麼追?薇姬養成 How to become one of WikiWomen? The curation of female wikipedia editors.
  2. 如何回報維基百科錯誤 BUG ?薇姬養成 How to report bug of Wikipedia? The curation of female wikipedia editors.

WMF comments[edit]

Hi Reke and Shangkuanlc. Thanks for revising the application and re-submitting it to PEG. We really appreciate your commitment to this project and supporting more women editors in the Taiwanese community. It's great to see that you've developed good partnerships with WoFOSS and PingBaiDaiWan. We have a few comments on the proposal and look forward to your responses.

  1. As Polimerek wrote above, please indicate in the budget which items you are asking WMF to cover. See here for an example of a budget that is split between funders.
  2. Will the participants be new or experienced editors? If new, we would suggest adding an element of progressive wiki training to the monthly meet-ups, similar to this program. We would also encourage you to expand the editing activities beyond just translation -- giving the women an opportunity to edit on any subject they are interested in and/or suggesting articles to improve/create that are closely tied to gender-related topics such as female biographies.
  3. Have you identified which pages you want to translate? We can help review or provide suggestions once you have a list.
  4. Please add measures of success for the number of female participants and the % of participants that come to multiple events. It seems that building a participant group that comes repeatedly and develops a community and social bond is one of the key success criteria of this project.
  5. It's great that the WoFOSS Taiwan team will be supporting with promotion, marketing, and training. It's a good goal to be able to train other women to lead the workshops/sessions in the future. Hopefully you can identify a few promising participants that will want to take this project forward.
  6. The Systemic bias workshop kit has good information on organizing events for women and around specific topics.

Thanks again for this proposal and all your efforts in pulling this project together! Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:26, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Alex for your followup and brainstorm ideas with us. Here are my answers to the above questions (excerpt from the email correspondence):
  1. About Polimerek's suggestion, we have split the budget into two different columns for money from different sources. Please refer to the budget part in the grant proposal.
  2. Participants will be mostly new editors. Interestingly, WoFOSS members are mainly programmers and only a few of them have edited Wikipedia. We are now using the teaching materials such as the Chinese brochure outputs from our previous grant, Reke is making some of the powerpoints too. Also, next Tuesday will be the sixth session of the program.
  3. We have translated some links on Gender gap, such as this one and this one. One of our female volunteer is working in a medical publication institution, she just found out that her publication agency's article is not fully translated, and tell me she might translate the whole English article into Chinese.
  4. About the measure of success... Reke have discussed with the participants in the last meet up on 21, June. The participants have brainstormed about the interesting topics they would like to edit. The initial conclusion is that they found the delicacy of Taiwan food is not well depicted in Chinese Wikipedia and they are focus to improve 30 articles of local food in Taiwan. Here is the list.
  5. Thank you for the reminder. Reke and I are observing, there are one of participants has started to create her own article after session. And also here is a small but exciting news, the lady who started to write her own article as above mentioned, her name is Jeane and she wrote a short but lovely campaign with beautiful words play in her blog. Hope we can keep encourage this feeling.
  6. Thank you, I love this workshop kit and used this in the last year edit-a-thon with academia sinica in July 2014. However, I am not sure whether the volunteers are interested in the translation of this kit. I can do the whole translation job in the worst case, it's just a bit time-consuming.
