There are also articles under the categories of no references, small articles, etc. Hence the quality of Kannada Wikipedia needs to be improvement. This project is a great effort to increase the authenticity by improving the quality of the articles.

• @Mallikarjunasj: - I have planned many workshops as part of this project. In some of them we will improve existing, create missing, pages related to policies. In some workshops we will improve, create or import and localise templates. In some workshops we will improve some of the existing articles which are very important but lack quality. • We are find the metrics to not be sufficient. We see an opportunity to reflect on ; at the end of the project what are the action and cognitive outcomes do you want to see and how and what will you measure to help you ascertain that the project has achieved what it intended to achieve.
• Given our understanding of the project and the geography it would be implemented , we find the budget to be inflated - kindly review.
• Please share the rationale informing the compensation costs indicated.
• We are keen to learn about the involvement of the community in the project development process ; what was their involvement in the design of the project etc.

Response to feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback provided. I have gone through the feedback and discussed all the aspects during the meeting with VThamaini (WMF) on Nov. 11, 2023. I explained the rationale for the figures mentioned in the grant application. Here is the gist:

• Feedback mentioned about insufficient metrics. But the feedback did not mention by what amount it is insufficient. Nevertheless, I agreed to increase the metrics. I have now increased the metrics and re-submitted the grant application. I hope it is sufficient now.
• Feedback mentioned about inflated budget. Again, there is no communication on by which part of the budget and by how much the committee felt the budget is inflated. I did a survey of the salaries in the non-profit sector in India and put 50% of that amount as remuneration. I believe this is in tune with the market scenario. Also, I have increased the metrics without increasing the budget. Hence I feel this is ok.
• About costs: these estimations are based on the are current market rates. I have not taken into consideration of any cost escalation like inflation, any other unforeseen circumstances, etc.
• About involvement of the community in the project development process: Please go through the point No.10.1 in the grant application. The preliminary work of quality survey of Kannada Wikipedia has been done some volunteers from the Kannada Wikipedia community. There were some informal discussions with some community members of Kannada Wikipedia community while developing the project design. This was not mentioned in the grant application.
• About the measure on how the project has achieved what it intended to achieve: I will use the established GA and FA method to measure this. There are many research articles available on this topic. Many people have done extensive research on the quality of Wikipedia articles. Most of them rely on GA and FA. These works are done mainly on English Wikipedia. I am not aware of any such work done on any Indic Wikipedia. The number of articles available in Indic Wikipedias may not be sufficient to a comparable statistical evaluation. Nevertheless, GA and FA are good enough indicators and I will use them.

General Support Fund Approved at USD 19,814

Dear Pavanaja,

Thank you for submitting your application seeking General Support Funds - Wikimedia Community Fund. The South Asia Regional Committee and Staff have reviewed, discussed and deliberated upon your application and made the decision to fund you at 19,814 USD inclusive of taxes and fiscal partner fees for the grant period 1st January 2024 to 31st December 2024.

Here are a few points to note:

• We see a clear need to improve how the project shares data reports for the project - including surveys and well-analysed data reports that support understanding the components of the project and its overall impact.
• Please share on Meta the current quality survey results and report that informed the articles you will work on. While we understand the rationale, we are keen on having visibility of the tools.
• We see the need to put in place measures that will ensure the new contributors do not counter your efforts of developing quality articles, which we know does happen as they learn how to contribute.
• Please tap into the Wikipedia Library initiative to access additional reference books.
• Use a stipend approach to resource personnel involved in the project while ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations.
• We look forward to learning about your progress in our mid-year conversation.
• Please note the funding will be distributed in two instalments and the second instalment after having the mid-term learning conversation.

We hope to continue having regular conversations over the course of your grant implementation. Do set up a regular schedule to connect with your South Asia  Programme Officer based on your needs.
