Regional Committee Feedback[edit]

@Sakhalinio and Basak: Hi! How are you? Thanks for detailing your plan to work with the Museums Association & Digital Culture Network as your approach to expanding your GLAM program. It’s great to hear that you are able to engage with a variety of institutions & potential partners this way to support content donations & generally introduce Wikimedia projects. Related to your work with museums:

  • In the evaluation section, for the 15 strategic partnerships, do you have an idea of how many institutions are expected to be museums vs other kinds of institutions?
  • What communities/regions in Turkey (or elsewhere) does the Museums Association represent?

It’s also helpful to see your planning to evaluate the general attitudes & perceptions of museum staff related to open knowledge platforms as well as Wikimedia projects. We think this will help your user group set priorities not only on who you can potentially work together with, but also identify needs that could be addressed in the trainings & other engagements you plan to have with these organizations.

Please let us know if you need any clarifications around the questions above. Your responses are requested by 3 May 2022 to help support a formal decision from the Regional Committee. Thanks again for your hard work on the proposal, and we look forward to your responses. On behalf of the Regional Committee, W (talk) 17:27, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for your feedback @W:! We are also very excited about working with museum staff and increasing our interaction with them.
  • We are expecting that most of our partnerships will continue to be with educational institutions; but we'll be doing joint projects with 3 museums in 3 different cities of Turkey and our intention is to organize events with 3 different types of museums (archeology, art, ethnography) and start creating good practises for museums in different fields.
  • Museums Association is an organization based in Ankara and having 400 members and branches in Istanbul, Mediterranean, Aegean Region, Marmara Region, Eastern Anatolia and South Eastern Anatolia regions of Turkey. We are already working with the Association on a project called Türkiye Müzeleri (Museums in Turkey to first add the data on the museums of Turkey on Wikidata; and then create the Wikipedia articles of the notable museums. Our plan is to make a series of presentations on Wikimedia projects; and editing training sessions during the year, each targeting museum staff at different cities and continue organizing activities with those museums we have established connections with in those training sessions. The questionnaire related to the attitudes of museum professionals about sharing knowledge on open platforms and their perception on Wikimedia projects is intended to be conducted during this series of trainings; and provide insight for future projects.--Basak (talk) 13:40, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Timeline update for funding decision announcements[edit]

@Sakhalinio and Basak: Hello Zafer and Başak, I hope you are both well. Due to an unexpected medical issue I experienced earlier in April, I unfortunately was not able to interact with the Regional Committee or generally work during much of April last month. Due to this absence, we were unfortunately not able to provide committee feedback in a manner consistent with our original schedule. Consequently, we will be adjusting the date for announcing a funding decision for your proposal by one week from May 18th to May 25th. This change will help support the time needed for you to review and respond to any additional committee feedback, as well as for the Regional Committee to finalize a funding decision. Please let me know if you have any questions or need clarification over this change in the schedule. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 23:43, 3 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

General Support Fund proposal approved in the amount of 720,000 TRY[edit]

Congratulations! Your grant is approved in the amount of 720,000 TRY (~49,000 USD) with a grant term starting 1 July 2022 and ending 30 June 2023.

The Regional Committee is happy to support Wikimedia Turkey’s programmatic work focused on community building, partnership development, and engagement with students overt the next year. We are glad your chapter has been able to respond to important dynamics in your community around fatigue from online programs and activities and that you anticipate being able to shift to more in-person activities over the next year. Wikimedia Turkey also has named important goals in engaging specific underserved communities in the country through some of its programs, namely older adults and women. Finally, the committee believes there is significant potential for impact in the training programs proposed for GLAM initiatives, especially as you have a connection to a broader set of cultural institutions through the Digital Cultural Network and Museums Association. We hope to see you share your learning from your interactions and training with professionals in these institutions.

An important consideration for Wikimedia Turkey moving forward concerns its budget for staffing costs, which currently represents over 75% of its total budget. For future funding requests, the committee encourages you to consider ways to invest more directly in programmatic or administrative areas to support activity growth or improvement in your organization. Alternatively, you could consider a different staffing model to support new roles, as it may not be sustainable to grow your programs through the addition of new staff members while maintaining current ones.

The committee looks forward to working together with you in your future work in the Wikimedia movement. On behalf of the committee, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:33, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
